At the suggestion of Mr. Balzac I am starting the Red Sox Playoff Thread.

Should you want the others we can start them too.

Am I the only Red Sox fan that is not threatened by the Angels pitching staff ... that offense is a different story ...

BOSTON, Oct. 2 — Josh Beckett had a defining moment as a major leaguer at age 23. When Beckett shut out the Yankees to clinch the decisive game of the 2003 World Series for the Florida Marlins, he achieved something incredible. It was also something that Beckett knew he might never have the chance to do again.

John Lackey of the Los Angeles Angels knows how Beckett felt because he was 24 when he had his defining moment in 2002. Lackey became the first rookie in 93 years to win a Game 7 in the World Series as he helped power the Angels past Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants, and to their first title.

Two starting pitchers from Texas, two pitchers who have thrived in the most important game a pitcher could pitch and two pitchers who will face each other when the Red Sox play the Angels in the opener of the American League division series at Fenway Park on Wednesday. One Josh and one John equal a pair of aces.

Both pitchers are trying to push themselves and their teams back into the World Series. Although Lackey said he would use his experiences from five years ago to help him, Beckett almost yawned when he was asked what he would carry with him from the way he pitched four years ago.

“They’re certainly not going to be a different lineup because of what I did in 2003,” Beckett said. “So I don’t think it has any bearing whatsoever on what’s going on.”

Beckett was being coy. Anytime a pitcher has succeeded in the postseason, the experience has to be helpful. Boston Manager Terry Francona complimented Beckett for working hard and for maturing, his way of noting how Beckett tempered his emotions, stopped overusing his fastball and became a smarter pitcher.

But Beckett, who was 20-7 with a 3.27 earned run average this season, offered little insight into why he made the changes. In fact, Beckett spoke more passionately about the lack of microphones in an interview room than he did about pitching differently.

“Every good team has guys like that on the team, where you send your guy and say, ‘This is our guy, and go get ’em,’” Francona said.

Lackey hopes that his previous history against Boston is not repeated in this series. Even though Lackey was 19-9 with a 3.01 E.R.A. this season, he lost his two starts against Boston. He is 1-6 with a 6.27 E.R.A. against the Red Sox, and is 1-4 with a 7.68 at Fenway, in his career.

“I don’t think they start with any extra runs tomorrow because of what I’ve done here in the last two starts,” Lackey said. “So it doesn’t matter. I’ll be here tomorrow, and we’ll get it on and get it.”

The Red Sox made one surprising decision by leaving Tim Wakefield, a 17-game winner, off their roster after a cortisone shot did not ease the pain in his sore back. Francona, who replaced Wakefield with Jon Lester, said the Red Sox were unsure if Wakefield could relieve against the Angels.

“Although, we all know Wake, he bleeds for us, but he understands it’s the right thing to do,” Francona said.

Meanwhile, Angels center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. and Bartolo Colón will not be on the roster in this series. Matthews has been bothered by knee and ankle injuries and Colón has a sore right elbow. Right fielder Vladimir Guerrero has a right triceps injury and may be the designated hitter.

The Angels are a scrappy, disciplined team who were second in the league with 139 stolen bases. They thrive on harassing opponents. Beckett said the Angels, who bunt, hit and run, steal and play more of a National League style, “play the game right.” After saying the Angels were fun to watch, Beckett acknowledged that it was also fun to watch a team defend them effectively.

The Red Sox, who were third in the league in runs scored, are more of a prototypical A.L. team with their deep, powerful lineup. Since the Red Sox had the best record in the A.L., they are, in some ways, being hunted. The Red Sox have a long history of being the hunters, including when they won the World Series as the wild-card team in 2004.

On a cool, sunny day, David Ortiz and Manny Ramírez drilled baseballs off and over the Green Monster. A stadium employee hosed down the box seats. A huge fan hummed as it was drying the freshly painted A.L.D.S. emblem on the field. These were some of the sights and sounds of postseason baseball. Beckett and Lackey will provide a lot more Wednesday

mmmmm id tend to go with the drop kick murphys as a sox band,,,,some assclown yankee fan pointed out that we pretend to be a team that is of less value so things like winning the east mean more to us than they really should,,,I believe they are forgetting all those years of misery and "what if's"

it's playoff time and im really seeing how hypocritical and rediculous the yankee fans truly are.

WOW!!!! You are just seeing that now ... ;)

Well I live in Jersey, so I see it more than you do. They are entitled ... they believe it's their birthright to win, so when they don't, they are unbearable.

That's a fact.

HOLY SHIT danesy...I was reading the post and thinking "Well, we don't have that sense of entitlement, like we will just win. We know that winning is something that must be done. You have to defeat the other team...out hit, out pitch, out play them. There is no magic fairy that will reach over the wall and pull a ball into the stands so that it can be called a home run when it is fan interference...winning is what you do, not what you deserve"

Entitelment...the EXACT word i was thinking...

Well thank you.

Since I live in Jersey I see it constantly. It's disgusting. I cannot even have a conversation with a Yankee fan around here. If I mention '04 here's what I hear:

"You got lucky ... everyone gets lucky once"
or
"Ooooh big deal, 1 in 86 years ... who cares"
or
"Good for you ... now you have to wait another 86 years"

Intelligent things of that nature. I don't like to argue ... I prefer having an INTELLIGENT baseball conversation. But I can't do that with Yankee fans who still chant "1918" or give the reason for hating the Red Sox as "cause you suck". Yep ... all very valid, intelligent points.

I like the be the official 2004 Yankee spokesman.

That 2004 Yankee team really had no business being up 3-0 at any point. They were the inferior team that season, ESPECIALLY after Olerud got hurt.

The Red Sox had Derek Lowe, who would have been the Yankees' #2, coming out of the pen for half the playoffs.

And havin' D-Lowe out of the pen is what??? A bad thing??? You use what ya got ... all hands on deck baby.

That's the first time I have heard a Yankee fan say that about the 04 team ... everyone I talk to pretends it didn't happen, or cries about how lucky we got.

Hence the reason I cannot fucking stand Yankee fans.

We started Kevin Brown in game 7 with Javier Vasquez. Did anyone give them a real shot?

Series was horribly managed, especially the usage of Mariano, but the Yankees 04 playoff team was possibly the worst overall Yankee playoff team of this run.

See this is what I am talkin' about.

You are sayin' that we didn't "earn" it without actually saying it.

"we started Kevin Brown in Game 7" = "Please ... we didn't even try"

Nah, starting Brown means the team was not very good if that was our best option.
And it was fun watching Tony Clark strike out in every big spot he was in.

Intelligent things like chanting "Yankees Suck" at Patriot games, Bruins games, concerts, fireworks shows, graduations, and anywhere else that isn't a Yankees/Red Sox baseball game?

Come on, a Yankees Suck chant at a Mets/Red Sox game is totally acceptable.

I forget which Boston writer wrote it on Monday but it was pretty much, "Congratulations Red Sox fans, it was at least 5mins after the rally started before I heard a 'Yankees Suck!' chant, that has to be a record."

I will freely admit to them doing that although I live in Jersey, so I don't get to see it much ...

BUT - everytime I have been to Fenway I have never seen Yanks fans harassed like I have been in NY. So big deal, they chant stupid shit ... better than the way I get treated in NY ...
