454 Questions

I got a couple of questions about a 454 motor.

In particular, 353049 Oval Port, Block #999289 High Performance 72-78.

I have a few parts I am getting together to complete one, just wanted to get some ideas/opinions.

For the intake manifold, I was going to go with a dual plane, oval port, natural, spread bore from Edlebrock. Is there anything that would work better?

For headers, the primary tube diameter is 1 3/4in. Does the size matter in the overall spectrum of things?

An Edlebrock carb with 750CFM, electric choke, square bore. The cam in it is hydraulic with a low idle.

Suggestions?

A bit outside my area, but thinking the headers and Carb are on the small side. Big cube motor like that will take a bunch of fuel, and too small of a header will affect performance. What kind of car?

It will be going into a Chevelle.

The roller cam in there is Xtreme Energy Retro-Fit Hydraulic from Comp. It's the smallest they got with the best mileage and smooth idle (RPM range 600-4600).

Are the Sanderson headers worth the extra money? This motor wont be pushing over 625HP, I don't know see it all too necessary to go over the top.

I am not building this thing to be a hot rod.

The 750 CFM carb will work perfectly on what sounds like a mild 454.
The intake manifold sounds like a good match.
The headers, I prefer 1-7/8" long tube headers as a minimum on a big block, but the 1-3/4 will work and give you a little more torque. It's a low revving motor, so I think you have a pretty good build in mind.

Plenty of fuel with a 750, I question the heads. If I recall 396 heads have larger valves. I'd suggest an aftermarket crank for sure as the bottom end is the most fail prone in the 454's. You know you can get the same hp for less money out of an ls1 with great fuel economy and mileage. If you're looking for the original look and feel I'd go with an old factory 396 intake too.
