LOS ANGELES — Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in “Marty” in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.

His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his family by his side.

Television fans loved Borgnine as the scheming Navy officer in the sitcom “McHale’s Navy.” Borgnine was also known as the heavy who beats up Frank Sinatra in “From Here to Eternity” and one of the thugs who menaces Spencer Tracy in “Bad Day at Block Rock.”

Ernest Borgnine...dead

He was 95. No need for a cause of death.

RIP Lt. Cmdr. McHale

So many dead celebrities.

I remember meeting him when I was a Junior Camper in the early 90s. We all knew him best as Sgt. Fatso Judson in From Here To Eternity.

RIP Ernest B!
He's in two of my favorite late '70s movies, 'Convoy' and 'The Black Hole'. I've been rewatching TBH on DVD recently....very underrated atmospheric film with a great score and very un-Disney like tones and themes.

a couple friends of mine met EB last year in Parsippany NJ at a Comic Con. If I had known, I would've gone too to have him autograph both of my DVDs of the previously mentioned movies.

The Black Hole is one of my all time favorite movies as well. I'm really hoping that its gets released on Bluray some day.

RIP Ernest Borgnine.

Ernest B as Harry Booth thought it was a good idea to take off with the Palomino alone only to quickly find out that he had no idea how to fly a spaceship and was blown up after nosediving into the Cygnus. Smooth move, Harry. We all knew you were all talk, no guts, and should have locked you up.

One of my favorite Simpsons moments is the cheer the kids give him after his intro.

I always loved Ernie B.

Besides McHale's Navy, I'll remember him best as the mean boss in Willard.
