Alan Wake To Be Removed from Stores Because of Expiring Licenses

Don't sleep through your chance.
By Casey DeFreitas

Alan Wake
is potentially in its last days because of expiring music licenses. To give players a chance to get the game before it’s pulled, developer Remedy announced on Twitter that Alan Wake is currently 90% off on Steam for the last 48 hours it's available.

The Alan Wake Sunset Sale, pricing Alan Wake at $3, will begin on May 13 at 10 a.m. PT and end May 15, when Alan Wake will be taken down.

Alan Wake's sunset sale

Though the expired music licenses won’t affect the side-story Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, it will still be offered at a discount as well along with all DLC.

Remedy has stressed repeatedly on Twitter that players who already own Alan Wake will retain the ability to play it well after it’s discontinued.

Thomas Puha, Remedy’s head of communications, pointed out it's not just one song causing all of the grief. Every track's license is expiring, including songs specifically curated for episode endings, like David Bowie’s Space Oddity, and songs from the in-game fictional band Old Gods of Asgard, performed by Poets of the Fall. Because the licensed soundtrack is such an integral part of Alan Wake, patching it out just isn’t a simple solution.

Instead, Remedy is looking into relicensing the music, but it’s unknown how long this process will take.

Really don't think it's worth $3.00. Story is dull as all fuck.

Really? I've never played it but it's one of those games that are held in the pantheon of "high regard"

I enjoyed the hell out of this game. I found it very creepy and enjoyable. I only wish they continued it.

I wish someone would make the game they showed at E3 ten years ago. I still have no interest in what it morphed into, even for $1.

That's what I thought it was going to be. What we got felt like an Alpha of a Game. Alan Wake is one of those 'beta males' you hear about. Unlikable and bland. Might give it a go, but there are far better survival games out there.
