Just joined the local Moose lodge (holy shit, cheap drinks), and I'm not 100% what the point was (except for cheap drinks). Any other members, or Elks, or Eagles, or the like? What were your experiences? What's the point?

I just joined these guys. Good group of fellas, no broads, good fitness program. My one gripe is the clubhouse is a bitch to get to.

Like one of those places where old men hang out drinking?

yep. Grandfather and father were members, so my brother and I joined. It has been a pretty cool experience even for a jaded asshole like me.

I'm not, but friends are. One is an elk and a few are Masons. The Elks are great when you want to get out of the house and drink for cheap while you watch a game and they have events that are pretty good with a good crowd.

My grandma is a member of the Elks, VFW, Moose, etc., but her "home" base is the Eagles. She's been a member since the 50's and has been to dozens of them all around the country. I've seen pictures of her partying it up with my grandpa playing pool in a fancy dress and my grandpa in a tie.

I remember as a kid always seeing the alcoholic-smelling Santa at Christmas time and doing the Easter brunches when we'd go visiting her. She's 90 and still goes there three times a week. She's in a shuffleboard league at one of them.

In PA, some social clubs were allowed to sell booze until 3:30 am. I don't know if that's the case anymore, but when I was younger I belonged to something called the Manor Club, just so I could go drinking after the bar closed.
