Hollywood arson fires: Officials seek tips after string of blazes

Authorities are asking members of the public to step forward with information after a string of 19 arsons in West Hollywood and Hollywood damaged buildings and cars throughout the area.
Police are canvassing the neighborhoods and issued a citywide tactical alert at 12:45 a.m. The Los Angeles Fire Department also doubled the number of arson teams on call to four, after firefighters scrambled overnight to put out the fires.
Authorities said the fires could have led to loss of life or injury.
In total, four suspected arson fires occurred in West Hollywood and 15 in Hollywood, including a blaze at the former home of Jim Morrison.

Police said calls started coming in shortly after midnight with reports of car fires in West Hollywood. Flames consumed three vehicles near Sunset and Carson, and several apartment buildings were damaged as flames spread from the burning cars to the structures.
At 2:39 a.m., as many as four vehicles were set on fire near a two-story apartment building in Hollywood, police said. In another blaze at 4:03 a.m., a vehicle fire threatened a residential complex at 1439 N. Poinsettia Place.
The latest fires come a day after police arrested Samuel Arrington, 22, of Sunland in connection with three arsons that occurred on a five-block stretch of Sunset Boulevard on Thursday morning. Police are not sure if the 19 arsons are the work of a copycat or if they arrested the wrong person.
It is also not clear whether authorities are looking for one or multiple suspects.
Arsonists are creepier than serial killers. Fucking firebugs.

California officials post $60,000 reward after 21-fire arson spree
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Twenty-one fires, set in rapid succession in the Hollywood area, have prompted authorities in California to post a $60,000 reward in what they say is one of the worst arson sprees in recent memory.

In almost every case, the fires were started on parked cars within a span of about five hours early Friday morning, officials said. Some of the fires spread to nearby buildings.

Among the homes damaged was one that was once occupied by Doors frontman Jim Morrison. The street where the house sits -- Rothdell Trail -- was the inspiration for the Doors song, "Love Street."

Seventeen fires were set in Hollywood; four others in West Hollywood -- all of them within a 2-square mile area.

Fire officials said they were relieved no one was hurt, although a firefighter suffered a non-life threatening injury.
String of arsons in Hollywood

"If you're setting something alight when people are going to bed, you obviously don't expect them to wake up," resident Mark Todd told CNN affiliate KTLA. "It sort of goes past arson to attempted murder."

The Hollywood area is home to about 20,000 people per square mile, said Los Angeles fire spokesman Erik Scott.

He also said the fires caused $350,000 in property damage -- a "conservative estimate."

County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky told reporters Friday afternoon that authorities are "dead serious about trying to apprehend the individual or individuals who are responsible for this."

"We want to get these SOBs before they hurt somebody," he said.

Authorities deployed extra police officers were deployed after sundown. The Los Angeles fire department's arson unit called in additional investigators to review surveillance footage and pore through the ashes.

"While our police officers and our fire departments are working on high alert in coming days, everyone must remain vigilant," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

By early Saturday morning, authorities had not made an arrest.

Not many white people left in LA. Shouldn't be too difficult to find the guilty one.

France's New Year's Tradition: Car-Burning
By Bruce Crumley / Paris Friday, Jan. 02, 2009

For much of the world, they became iconic of France's worst social ills: the burned-out carcasses of thousands of cars set ablaze during nearly three weeks of nationwide rioting in 2005. But as yet another orgy of automobile arson on Wednesday demonstrated, the torching of cars in France has not only become an everyday event; it's also now a regular form of expression for disenfranchised suburban youths wanting to make sure the rest of the country doesn't forget they exist. And their fiery presence is never felt so strongly as it is each New Year's Eve — the day of France's unofficial festival of car-burning. (Read a special report on the 2005 French riots.)

According to figures from the French Interior Ministry, 1,147 cars went up in smoke on New Year's Eve — a 30% rise on the 879 autos torched the same night in 2007. As often is the case, the worst-hit areas were the disadvantaged neighborhoods that sit beyond the suburban peripheries of most French cities. A total of 422 cars were burned in Paris-area housing projects, compared to 12 in the relatively well-policed Parisian intra muros. Other cities whose unemployment-racked, racially tense banlieues also lived up to their reputations for frequent car-burning included Strasbourg, Lille, Toulouse and Nantes. Across France, police arrested a total of 288 people on New Year's Eve (vs. 259 the year before) — though not all were charged, and many were apprehended for offenses unrelated to arson. (Read TIME's top 10 crime stories of 2008.)

In a country where car-burning isn't a common symptom of socioeconomic unrest, news of so many automobiles being torched would be alarming — if not a sign of brewing insurrection. In France, however, word of the destruction that accompanied the evening the French call Saint-Sylvestre was met with a mix of Gaulic shrugs and low-grade peevishness.

In revealing the figures on Thursday, French Interior Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie acknowledged that the tally of car-burnings had indeed increased over the previous year. Yet Alliot-Marie also said the enormous fleet of now carbonized vehicles shouldn't darken a New Year's Eve that was "unanimous......

My landlord had his other building a couple blocks away get torched. Luckily, I think it was random and not some revenge plot against him.

Tonight we had the Guardian Angels patrolling our street and checking out our car port.

It was also the first time I've ever seen the Guardian Angles around here.
