NEW YORK (AP) -- Art Bell, radio's master of the paranormal and outward edges of science, will return to the microphone on Sept. 16 with a new nighttime show on Sirius XM Radio.
Bell was one of radio's top syndicated voices in the 1990s before walking away from his nightly show in 2002 due to family issues. He worked occasionally after that but hasn't been on the air since Halloween 2010.
"I missed it terribly," said Bell, 68, whose weeknight show will air live from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET. Sirius is building a studio at Bell's rural Nevada home where he will work.
A Sirius representative contacted Bell through social media a few months ago, leading to the formation of his show, "Art Bell's Dark Matter." He'll talk about things like UFOs, ghosts, near-death experiences and weird aspects of science. He'll do interviews and take calls from viewers.
Scott Greenstein, Sirius XM president and chief content officer, said the show will be "uncensored, unrestricted, uncluttered and utterly unique."
"There's probably more interest in the genre now than when I did it," Bell said. "When I did it, I was damned near alone."
Bell was on some 500 radio stations nationwide and "quit when he was at the top of his game," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers, a magazine that covers the radio industry.
Harrison said Bell's subject matter has roots in old-time radio, and he predicted it will become popular once again in the coming years.
"He'll be looked at as one of the veteran, old masters," Harrison said. "He's the real deal when it comes to marching to the beat of a different drummer."
There's also a potential rivalry with George Noory, who replaced Bell on the syndicated show. Bell isn't a fan, saying he considers Noory "not edgy enough." Noory's program is on later at night, so the two will not compete directly live.
No contract terms were divulged.
Bell said he's intrigued to learn the differences between satellite and terrestrial radio.
"It seems to me they are the next step in technology," he said. "I've always been a technological junkie. The mix of what they're giving me, the freedom that they're giving me, is priceless."

Yay. Good to hear. Wasn't he a pretty barebones guy when it came to his broadcasting anyway?

...Also, I sincerely hope that his first caller doesn't say fuck just for fuck's sake.

For years I used Art Bell as background noise to help me fall to sleep, 75% of the time I'd fall asleep quickly and 25% of the time the topic would interest me and I'd be up all night...

I'll glad to hear he's coming back because the dope that replaced him on Coast is just awful.

Art Bell is the best and this is probably the best money seriuosXM money spent on new shows they have ever done

he will be a huge success instantly and they know it.

he is almost as big of get as getting Rush Limbaugh, well maybe not that big but he does draw a huge night time audience

maybe he will come to NY and the boys will be able to get him in studio

George Noory just seems like a nice guy but he tries to come off as weird and it ain't happening

Art doesn't have to try to be weird, he is just plain weird and gets the most out of his guests

I hope I have the chance to listen to his new show

Do your homework and politely ask your parents. They may let you stay up late on a Friday. Good luck.

Yes! When I was a kid I listened to him a hand full of times, glad he's coming back. My favorite hoax call happened on his show. Some guy called as Gordan Freemon the main character of Halflife and he preceded to tell him the plot of the game. His show always made me feel better about my sanity.

I liked the Fallout caller...was that on Noory's watch? Anyway, Art Bell had it with The Amazing Kreskin's horseshit, and banned him from his show after that UFO nonsense. That was cool of him to do.

Art would sometimes get fed up with the guests and just throw them off the show if he thought they were not truthful or competent , he takes no guff

Thank Prank call was on Noory's watch. Glad to hear Art is back. At least he's more open to question his guests. Although Noory did ban Sylvia Browne from the show.

Great post. I absolutely agree that given Art's loyal fan base, he will deliver a significant number of new subscribers to the platform.
Signing Art Bell exclusively to SiriusXM will be much more beneficial to the company than if they had signed Rush Limbaugh to an exclusive deal simply because there are a plethora of Limbaugh alternatives where his listeners can get the same shtick; Art is a true original who (if promoted properly) will drive a ton of revenue in the form of new subscribers, new unit sales and new advertisers.

Btw @weeniewawa you mentioned that you hope you have a chance to listen to his new show, Art's website is offering a free 30 day SiriusXM trial that you might be interested in if you're not a current subscriber: http://artbell.com/how-to-listen-to-art-bell/

Art Bell loves to blabber on about topics of paranormal horsefeathers nonsense, but I was impressed when he refused to buy into the 9/11 Truther crap. He could've pandered to those asshats and boosted his ratings big time, but he never did. There were PLENTY of those retarded Truthers in his audience, and they'd call in to him with their conspiracy theories constantly, but he just kept shutting them down... and boy oh boy did it piss the Truthers off royally...

Art Bell Responds to 9-11 Outrage

by Victor Thorn - June 18, 2004

On the morning of Sunday, June 13, 2004, syndicated radio talk show host Art Bell betrayed, slapped in the face, and turned his back on every 9-11 researcher in this country (and the world). He did so by embarking on a venom-filled tirade where he called these truth-seekers “asinine,” “reprehensible,” “horrendous,” and declared that they “didn’t have a shred of proof” to substantiate their claims. Bell also made it known that he “couldn’t believe elected officials would choose to kill thousands of its own citizens.” Now, this isn’t simply ‘entertainment’ as some have suggested. Rather, it is a direct attempt to influence millions of listeners and lead them in a direction that is contrary to some extremely well-researched evidence, and this is something I take very seriously.
I always admired Art for that.

Was listening to art and he had Richard Hoagland on. Hoagland was talking about pictures from the mars rovers. Hoagland kept saying that most of the rocks were pieces of ancient Martian Martian machinery or crashed space craft etc.
Art said " I'm sorry Richard, all I see is rocks"
Hoagland was not on the show for awhile after that :)

Art never tried to hide it when he thought someone was spewing bullshit, George always reaffirms the guest; with that lunatic Hoagland, George thinks he's a genius.
