Longtime Scientologist Nancy Cartwright — best known as the voice of Bart Simpson — last year gave the church $10 million to help spread the word of founder L. Ron Hubbard into other galaxies.

It was all part of Scientology’s Global Salvage effort, which aims to “de-aberrate” Earth — meaning to rid mankind of psychology ills and other “aberrant” behavior.

Surprisingly, Nancy, 50, forked over twice as much as the Scientology’s most prominent member, Tom Cruise, who only gave $5 million in an installment plan.

In 2004, the 46-year-old Lions for Lambs actor was awarded a Platinum Meritorious Award for a $2.5 million gift. Two years later, he doled out another $2.5 million, for which the International Association of Scientologists kicked him up to Diamond Meritorious awardee.
Recent Scientology publications reveal that a host of A-list Scientologists were honored for their generosity at a black-tie awards ceremony at the church’s headquarters in Clearwater, Fla., last summer.

PageSix.com obtained copies of Impact magazine, which feature images of the various gold trophies, crystal statuettes and plaques "awarded to members who have donated" the respective amounts of money.
The Simpsons star (above) appears in a photo at the event with fellow Patron Laureate Awardees Steve Brackell and Jack and Lucy Murphy, as well as Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige.
Kirstie Alley matched Tom’s donation, but fellow actors John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston donated just a million each. Former Mrs. Elvis, Priscilla Presley, kicked in a relatively paltry $50,000.
Here are some of the celeb gifts from 2007 and their corresponding rewards:
  • Nancy Cartwright, 50, Patron Laureate Award: $10 million.
  • Kirstie Alley, 57, Diamond Meritorious Award: $5 million.
  • John Travolta, 53, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
  • Kelly Preston, 45, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
  • Priscilla Presley, 62, Patron Award: $50,000

Celebrities already feel self important and the concept of a philosophy that teaches you that you are your own god is the next logical step for them.

Bingo.

All of the other cults... Christianity, Islam, etc... are based upon being humble and praising a higher deity.

$cientology allows a person to worship themselves. Celebrities and self worship go together like pills and liquor.

But have you ever attempted to read his work? It's horseshit, how does a hacky scifi writer create a religion based on a supposed failed movie script?

They could become satanists and worship themselves for free.

In Satanism, the self is God. Out of the self comes ones own experience of life. This experience of life is sacred.

Scientology was smart. The guy started out getting rich investors to pitch in for his scheme. Then proceeded to curve the law and tax system to a more favorable way. Then he worked on getting followers.

I think at this point the church exists for a few to live wildly expensive lifestyles while the rest tithe to them just for connections and access (or for them to keep secrets).
