Saturday, when Miss Montana Alexis Wineman takes the stage, her story will be unlike any other.
Alexis Wineman has always been different. And her story of succeeding in spite of her differences needs no embellishment.

Wineman, 18, is the first Miss America contestant to be diagnosed with autism. According to the National Institutes of Health, autism is a neurodevelopment disorder whose hallmark feature is impaired social interaction. People who live with autism typically have difficulty making friends and find it hard to initiate or sustain a conversation. Those with more severe forms of the disorder may exhibit repetitious language and behavior patterns, a preoccupation with certain objects or subjects, and severe anxiety if forced to divert from specific rituals or routines.

Despite living with a condition that compels many to withdraw from social interactions, Alexis Wineman is competing in a contest that demands an outgoing personality and unblinking exposure to public scrutiny.
Though Wineman lives with a mild form of autism on the wide spectrum of the disorder, much of her childhood could be characterized as an ordeal of frustration and loneliness.

“I felt so alone growing up, and I still do at times,” Wineman told a group of 300 people at conference in October put on by the Helena-based ChildWise Institute. “Something was wrong with me, and no one could tell me what it was.”

By the time she was in the fifth grade, Wineman’s difficulties in school were becoming more apparent. Deadlines and timed math tests made it harder to fly under the radar or get by “as the cute one who was just a little slow.”

Wineman’s parents took her to see a variety of specialists who misdiagnosed Wineman as having depression or some other neurological disorder. She was given antidepressants that made her tired, angry and forgetful. When she was 11, Wineman was properly diagnosed with Pervasive development disorder, including borderline Asperger’s syndrome — a high-functioning version of autism.

Long after autistic people have broken such barriers as becoming astrophysicists, doctors, musicians, and artists, we have finally broken the last barrier of winning beauty pageants. Huzzah!

Depression isn't a neurological disorder.

When did Miss America start having a winter-wear competition?

How can us normals understand what autism is like?!?!

If only she were black.

But good for her. It's not often you see qualities such as aloofness and coming across as a cunt in models.

Fuck. I went to Missoula today. It was -21 here and by the time I got to Missoula, it was up to 6. If she was smart, she would be one of those hairy-legged Montana wimmens who don't shave for warmth.

She thinks it's hard to associate with people now? Wait until she's not so hot that men trip over themselves to kiss her ass and "yes yes" every retarded thing that comes out of her stupid trap.

I think it speaks to how not shallow we are that despite her disabilities we'd still do her based on nothing else besides her attractiveness.

Good on you Wackbag.

Pretty sure the majority of people back home are at least slightly retarded. You can't willingly live somewhere that cold without some sort of brain deficiency.
