NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
One man who wants to remain anonymous posted a video showing himself driving around Manhattan with a device on his dashboard that makes a cow mooing sound signaling that your privacy is being compromised by something sitting right in your own car: your E-ZPass tag.

In a blog, the driver says he rigged this "cow" so it would go off whenever E-ZPass technology was being used. You can see for yourself: it's going off in the middle of New York City, nowhere near a toll plaza.

These contraptions, which reportedly went up citywide over the last few months on traffic lights, are what are reading your E-ZPass tag.

Former NYPD sergeant and FBI agent Manny Gomez says the technology is great if you're in his world: intelligence.

But the former head of NYCLU, Norman Siegel, says there are big questions about what is being done with the information in the name of security.

The New York City Department of Transportation admits the scanners belong to the department, but insist they are for studying traffic patterns.

"E-ZPass readers have been used for more than a decade to provide transportation agencies, the public and news services with vital information about real-time traffic conditions," the DOT said in a statement.

Although this probably ranks as one of the world's worst kept secrets, still annoying that those fucks are collecting personal data with impunity.

At least someone proved it instead of the tin foil hat crowd crowing about it with no evidence.

I was using some night vision and saw a bright light on a tower on a summit. No visible light without the NV. They have a big infrared light up there, doing something with HAARP I guess. My aluminum foil Stetson stopped it cold before it could hurt me.

Take down EZ Pass and place in non-static bag after using. You're no longer 'trackable'.

Umm... allow me to remind all that everybody and his brother is walking/driving around with a cell phone that lets THEM know where you are, and where you've been, always.

Keep that in mind while you're casting a suspicious eye on your EZPass tag.

I don't think that will stop it

you need a faraday cage of wire mesh to achieve that, like the RFID wallets

or put it under your tin foil stetson
The bag it comes in will not allow it to transmit, sir. You could test it out by placing it in the bag then driving through a toll plaza if you're doubtful.

The baggy thing the tag comes in will stop it from transmitting.

But I lost mine, so if I don't want my pass to transmit for whatever reason... need a receipt, lonely and want to chat with the toll taker, disposing of a body and don't want my movements tracked, etc... I will just sit on the tag.

Shit you not... it works. Works for me anyway... maybe my ass has magical Faraday properties that normal asses don't possess.

Most likely from all the anal probes you've received over the years.

Do all the toll plazas around NYC have gates that have to lift? As when we only had one tag we could drive through the ez-pass lanes with no issue as both license plates were registered to the tag.

then it must be a special bag unlike the anti static bags computer components come in

I live not near any toll roads or bridges so I will never get to enjoy those

I have tho been on the injun toll roads in Oklahoma

I doubt they are doing much tracking these days, unless it is the liquor trucks

Pointing out that the passes have been used in divorce court cases to track a cheating spouse is "tin fool hat".

It is a special bag with a foil inside.
When the transmitter is in it the signal is dead.

But as THP pointed out, what's the big deal?
More people have phones than EZPass and they are
just as trackable. Most people have them on them
and turned on at all times.

Those divorce cases have nothing to do with "The Man". It's just EZPass info, on an EZPass activity statement, being used by the people who have legal access to that info. The same as if a cheating spouse was busted with info that appeared on a credit card statement.

"The Man" doesn't give two shits about cheating spouses and divorce cases.

the man does when he is blackmailing political enemies by using the NSA to gather his info and this is being used by the NSA as well

I have heard of the easy pass type system that truckers use to bypass scales being able to be shielded by sitting on them too
