Iran [Seth Leibsohn]

The NYSUN is reporting " In a move that has stunned New York, the Bloomberg administration is in discussions to escort the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to Ground Zero during his visit to New York next week, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said today. The Iranian mission to the U.N. made the request to the New York City Police Department and the Secret Service, who will jointly oversee security during the president's two-day visit. Mr. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to arrive September 24 to speak to the U.N. General Assembly as the Security Council decides whether to increase sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program."

How far we've come. Rudy Giuliani, when he was mayor, had Yasser Arafat escorted out of Lincoln Center, and was right to do so—he didn't consider ways to make Arafat's visit comfortable.

There is a debate of sorts as to whether the U.N. can legally deny a visa to a head of state such as Ahmadinejad. We denied Arafat a visa in 1988 under the fiction that he was not a head of state. But what about our states? Anyone remember 1983 and how two Governors, Tom Kean and Mario Cuomo, of New Jersey and New York handled their duties? They denied Soviet landing rights in their states as a result of the USSR shooting down KAL 007.

As the U.N. screamed over this lese majeste, threatening to deny the U.S. as home to the U.N., the late Ambassador Charles Lichenstein took it just fine, saying: "We will put no impediment in your way. The members of the U.S. mission to the United Nations will be down at the dockside waving you a fond farewell as you sail off into the sunset."

How I miss the days when city, state, and national leaders took terrorism as seriously as they used to.

I'm wondering if if the NYPD and Secret Service are under some kind of treaty or diplomatic obligation to provide security to a visiting head of state, even if he is a crazed terrorist savage.

The best response would be something like " ... having reviewed the situation we have determined that, within security considerations, the visit would be untenable and therefore deny the request."

Don't expect to see many New Yorkers protesting this POS, they'll be busy lining up to lick his ass. I forgot which one but, either Columbia or NYU is hosting some kind of upscale reception for Ahmadinejad and Chavez.

City Rebuffs Request by Ahmadinejad
Visit to Ground Zero Has Been Rejected, Police Say

BY SARAH GARLAND - Staff Reporter of the Sun
September 19, 2007
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/63009

New York City, moving swiftly in the face of outrage from the White House to the political hustings to the Jewish community, is rejecting a request by President Ahmadinejad to lay a wreath at Ground Zero when the Iranian is in New York next week for a meeting of the United Nations.

After a spokesman for the National Security Council in the White House said that a decision on Mr. Ahmadinejad's visit was up to New York City, the police department put out a statement saying that the idea for a visit had been quickly dismissed earlier this month in a mid-level meeting among aides of the police department, the secret service, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"This is a matter for the City of New York resolve," a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, Gordon, Johndroe, said. He added pointedly: "It seems odd that the president of a country that is a state sponsor of terror would visit ground zero." Minutes later administration officials were saying privately that a visit by Mr. Ahmadinejad anywhere near ground zero was "not going to happen."

News that such a visit was being considered was greeted with astonishment and outrage by New Yorkers on both sides of the political spectrum, and not only New Yorkers but presidential candidates, including Senator Clinton, Governor Romney, and Senator Thompson, each of whom opposed the visit as dishonoring the memory of those who died on September 11, 2001.

"It is unacceptable for Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who refuses to renounce and end his own country's support of terrorism, to visit the site of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil in our nation's history," Mrs. Clinton said in a statement.

"An insult to the memory of those who died on 9/11 at the hands of terrorists, and those who have fought terrorism for years," is how a spokeswoman for Mr. Thompson, Karen Hanretty, characterized the proposed visit. A Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, called the plan "shockingly audacious."

That both federal and city law enforcement have been quietly considering the request to escort Mr. Ahmadinejad to ground zero during his visit to New York next week for a meeting of the United Nations was confirmed by New York City's police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, today. Mr. Kelly, at a routine press appearance at police headquarters mid-day today, indicated discussions were still underway over Mr. Ahmadinejad desire to visit ground zero during a two-day trip to address the world body as the Security Council considers issuing stricter sanctions for Iran's uranium enrichment program.

Mr. Kelly said the NYPD and Secret Service were in discussions with the Iranian Mission about the logistics for the possible visit and whether it would take place at all. He said Mr. Ahmadinejad would not be allowed to descend into the pit for safety reasons related to ongoing construction at the site. "There has been some interest expressed in his visiting the area," Mr. Kelly said. "It's something that we are prepared to handle if in fact it does happen."

Later this afternoon an NYPD spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, issued a statement saying the police department would oppose a visit to the area around ground zero, and said it had refused Mr. Ahmadinejad's request earlier this month to enter the pit. "Requests for the Iranian president to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds," he said.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations did not respond immediately to requests for comment. The Iranian mission to the United Nations made the request to the NYPD and the Secret Service, which will jointly oversee security for the president.

Mr. Ahmadinejad's visit to the United Nations will be his third to New York City in two years. A visit to ground zero would mark the first time he or any other Middle Eastern leader made an official visit to the site of the September 11 terrorist attacks, according to Mr. Kelly. Mr. Ahmadinejad is one of the most anti-American leaders in the world and has vowed that Israel will be destroyed.

After news broke of the Iranian's request to visit ground zero, a vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, Malcolm Hoenlein, said a visit by Mr. Ahmadinejad "would violate the sanctity of the sacred place and the memory of those who perished there."

Mr. Hoenlein is among those who were already organizing a protest against the Iranian leader Monday in front of the United Nations. He told The New York Sun that the Iranian president should be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the United Nations and should not be permitted to travel the full extent of the 25-mile radius that is normally allowed for foreign dignitaries attending meetings at the world body.

Condemnation of the idea is not restricted to the Jewish community, however, and came quickly and spiritedly from several quarters. A prominent Iranian scholar and founder of the American Iranian Council, Hooshang Amirahmadi, said the plan illustrated Mr. Ahmadinejad's naiveté and misunderstanding of the American people.

"He doesn't understand how America works. He doesn't understand the depths of the problems with the U.S.," Mr. Amirahmadi said. "Somebody may have told him that ground zero is very symbolic to Americans, and that visiting there and saying something would help —the problem is that everybody around him is stupid."

The proposed visit also angered local officials. Council Member Eric Gioia said he would be organizing a protest against the visit to which he would invite the families of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. "It's an outrage," Mr. Gioia said. "The city of New York should not be giving a photo op to a tyrant."

Iran has been called the world's "most active state sponsor of terrorism" by the U.S. State Department.

They had no involvement in 9/11, but they are a state sponsor of terrorism. They, through their hezbollah proxies, bombed the marine barracks in Beirut in the '80s, through their Quds organization hit the Khobar towers in Saudi Arabia in the 90's, and have placed hezbollah cells in the US. One was busted running scams to raise funds in North Carolina.

Officials Reject Iranian President's Bid To Visit Ground Zero

NEW YORK -- Officials on Wednesday decided to reject the Iranian president's request to visit ground zero just weeks after the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The decision came in a meeting that included representatives of the NYPD, the Secret Service and the Port Authority, according to police.

NYPD officials confirmed in a statement that earlier this month the department received a request from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit the World Trade Center site during the United Nations General Assembly. Ahmadinejad asked permission to lay a wreath at the site.

The request to enter the fenced-in site was rejected because of ongoing construction there, police spokesman Paul Browne said. "Requests for the Iranian president to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds," Browne said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said earlier Wednesday that the city was considering Ahmadinejad's request, but Browne said about two hours later that Kelly had misspoke.

The Port Authority, which owns the trade center site and is the only agency that could grant Ahmadinejad permission to go inside, said it never received such a request, contradicting the police statement.

"We have not been asked to accommodate the president of Iran," Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said Wednesday.

It wasn't clear whether Ahmadinejad wanted to descend to the base of the trade center site, where the fallen twin towers stood, or lay a wreath on a public sidewalk outside the site. Telephone calls to the Iranian Mission to the United Nations were not immediately returned.
It's a non issue. It's not happening. Move along, nothing to see here.

And I fail to see anything wrong with the things hes said. To call the man a terrorist for thinking a certain way is insane. A lot of people hate Israel, does that mean that he has the means to accomplish his dream?

Let me guess, you believe that America is the best country in the world? Not only that, we can do no wrong..

Jesus, a lot of people in the world don't share are views on life, we're gonna consider them all terrorists now?

I love how the world has changed and everything is "Preemptive". Mr. Towel head is the next Hitler! Why? What has he done? He may be a fuck, he may hate America but he has yet to do anything.

Of course, im sure you're part of the 20% of America that thinks we have the means to conquer the world.. $10 trillion dollar deficit and all.

I sincerely hope you're not advocating allowing the leader of a country that actively supports terrorist activities to visit the site of the worst terrorist attack in American history. If you are, you're delusional.

I don't even think he should be allowed in the country... Secondly, the UN should be abandoned or moved to a "Neutral" country.

I just can't stand the very broad definition of "Terrorist" and the holy then thou fucksticks in this country who think we conquest around the world to spread peace.

I agree that we really shouldn't be in Iraq. That being said, we generally don't "conquer" a country. We do step in when human rights are being beat to shit by some douchebag dictator asshat. Should we be doing that? I don't know. But once we get rid of the dick who is beating his people down we generally try to help them get on their feet, and then we step aside & let them rule themselves.

I believe your definition of terrorism is too narrow to be on par with today's actual definition. Ten years ago, I and most of the rest of the country thought a terrorist was a towel head who blew up a bus full of kids. Occasionally even a crazy white guy obsessed with an Arian nation.

Currently, if you hate America you're considered a terrorist. If you share a "radical" view you're un-american.

That mindset is what has caused us to be in the current clusterfuck. America, as a nation will never survive if we set out to influence the world alone. Lots of "Empires" have tried it and it never lasts.

Serrrrrrriously, can any of you accept that maybe, as a nation, we haven't been the nicest people ever? Did we deserve 9/11? Probably not but its hardly such a large event that we need to kill ourselves trying to "change" the world.

On top of that, there are so many other problems in the world that we seem to ignore that will more than likely come back to bite us in the ass.

Half the people that we fight against seem to be former "allies." We supported Towel Head #1 at one time because it was beneficial. In fact we supported his terrorist actions against the soviets in Afghanistan. We were mutually benefiting partners. He wanted the Russians out and we wanted another "Ally" against the REDS.

What sent Osama over the edge? Fucking him over in Afghanistan.. (Giving him weapons but no real support) and moving our troops in Saudi Arabia.

I mean fuck, religion in general blows but when you spit in the eyes of a population as a whole and expect no retaliation then you're fucked in the head.

youve repeatedly ignored the fact that Hezbollah IS a terrorist organization, and it is funded and run by Iran. But I doubt you have a problem with what they have done and still do.

what sent Bin Laden over the edge was the fact that the arabs wanted the US to deal with Iraq ****** and pillaging Kuwaitt, and not Bin Laden.

I would say its hard not to go against the grain when you're surrounded by bigots, racists and die hard patriots.. you know the typical O and A fan.

There are 300 million people in the United States and close to 7 billion on the Earth as a whole. Stick your head in the sand, call every else a savage and listen to GW.

Ever think that maybe, just maybe, other people around the world might have a different view on life? Quite possibly we may not have the best view or way of life?

Get back to me in twenty years, when the worlds population shoots to 12 billion and we'll see if the US has converted everyone.

Or...

We worry about ourselves, worry about securing our own assets, borders and citizens. Stop policing the world and stop pissing off the majority of the world.
