(It was actually the passenger that got killed)

BOSTON -- Connecticut state police say they are looking for the source of a 31/2-inch-long bolt that flew through the windshield of a car on Interstate 95 and killed a Waterbury woman.
Police said Tuesday the bolt may have broken off a dump truck that was traveling in the opposite direction.
Forty-year-old Sara Betancourt was killed Saturday afternoon as she was riding in the right front passenger seat of a sport utility vehicle going south on the highway in Greenwich.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the accident or knows about the vehicle that lost the bolt to contact state police.
As if I'm not already paranoid on the highways.. I really needed another excuse.

Why can't SOMETHING be done about those fucking dump trucks that are CONSTANTLY dropping rocks and pebbles all over the highways?? What is it gonna take? IT'S UNSAFE!!!

In Washington state we have a secure load law. Something like a $1000 fine for not having a secure load and this:

(1) No vehicle shall be driven or moved on any public highway unless such vehicle is so constructed or loaded as to prevent any of its load from dropping, sifting, leaking, or otherwise escaping therefrom.

“Maria’s Law,” a law was named for Maria Federici who was severely injured by an entertainment center that fell off an open trailer while she was driving on Interstate 405, has made it a crime to fail to secure a load that results in bodily injury. Conviction could bring up to one year in jail and $5,000 in fines. The person injured would also have access to a state compensation fund for crime victims.
Consequently, we don't have that problem.

I get freaked out whenever I pass 18 wheelers and dump trucks. I know shit like this is a rarity, but it still freaks me out.

What does it take to get a law passed? Like what is the process to get them to even look at it. It's really fucking bad over here. It's like those fucking dump truck drivers don't give a shit that they're leaving broken windshields, dented cars, and sometimes flat tires in their wake!

Me toooooooooooo!

The bolt didn't necessarily come of the dump truck's "load," it sounds like it came of the truck itself so even if it was a sealed container load it would have happened. Bolts and nuts fall off of moving vehicles all the time. I've been hit with stuff just following regular cars that kicked up road debris into my windshield.

And like DTR said, the laws are already on the books. People just assume there's going to be collateral damage transporting rock and other things like that. Unless it's a real flagrant violation, you can't go writing up truckers for violations all the time. Having just a couple of moving violations on their record can ruin their careers. And companies don't want to get sued for improperly secured loads so they try and take as many precautions as they can.

I was on a highway in Israel once, driving a safe distance behind an 18-wheeler that was loaded with wooden palates. All of a sudden a strap breaks, and the thing start shooting these palates onto the road. It was probably the most scared I've ever been in a car, quickly having to weave between these things and pull over to the side of the road. It was fucking crazy.

I agree, and we should outlaw cars too! Had a kid racing his go fast import the other way on a 2 lane highway. Blew his motor that the crank bearing cap went through the oil pan and took out my radiator on my car. So outlaw cars or outlaw kids, or hell do both. :action-sm

I was driving on 81 on the way to canada and a state dump truck that was cleaning up highway had one of those shitty plastic bed liners you get for pickups in the back (I guess someone tossed it away). They didn't tie it down with anything and of course it flies out right in front of me.

I had more to the story but I don't feel like typing anymore

Dump trucks are the worst, for sure. And no, they don't care about your broken windshield.

Honestly if anyone has seen that doc "the good son" with Mulcahey Culkin and frodo you would know that the bad kids in neighborhoods throw things off overpassesessessesesses all the time. I'm willing to bet (I'm pretty loaded, I ve been delivering papers for three weeks already) that kids did this.
I've seen the movie so I know it to be true. And I remember a bunch of kids who did this tipe of stuff near the skate park in my town. They beat me one day when I was handing out flyers from my church (The benefits of heavens halfpipe: why prayer and skating go hand in hand) ill have my revenge on those fagitts one day. This Sunday is my fourth class at tiger schulmans, ill be ripped by Tuesday, no doubt about it.

Poor cat :(

I'm actually part of a vigilanty group that goes to black neighborhoods and rescues mistreated animals. My dad is team leader (great wizzart or something) the most retarded thing is that they make me wear this white dunce cap/ghost hat looking thing at the meetings. People must hate animals too because we can't even march in the parades here

Not Like people are out to get a free windshield. I had some one call me saying i dropped rocks out of my mason dump. The day it happened i just got done washing my truck and it didn't have any thing in it.

As for the bolt most likely it was on the road dropped from one of the metal gypsies.
