AMC announces 'Breaking Bad' season 5 premiere date

Final season will begin in July, with 8 episodes this summer, 8 in 2013
By Alan Sepinwall Monday, May 21, 2012 3:28 PM

We've known for a while that the final season of "Breaking Bad" would be made up of 16 episodes, but we didn't know exactly when it would debut, or how AMC would arrange the episodes to maximize their remaining installments of the Emmy-winning drama.

Now we do, as the cable channel announced today that the final season will premiere on Sunday, July 15 at 10 p.m., and that the plan is to air 8 episodes this summer and then the remaining 8 episodes in the summer of 2013.

(As to why they don't just refer to this as two short seasons: it's a contractual issue. Same reason the final 21 episodes of "The Sopranos," which also aired over two years, are considered the show's sixth "season.")

AMC also announced the two shows that will be paired "Breaking Bad" this summer. Starting July 15 at 11 p.m. will be a new unscripted series, "Small Town Security," about a family-owned security company in a small town in Georgia. And starting August 12 at 9 p.m. will be season 2 of "Hell on Wheels." (Which reminds me I still have 2 or 3 episodes of that first season to catch up on.)

Why are so many channels doing this now? Financially does it make more sense to break a season up, because they only pay for one and can take advantage of two peak seasons? It's really fucking annoying, and to me it makes more sense to knock the season out as soon as possible and move on to DVD/Blue-Ray sales.

I think it's because a large part of Breaking Bad's value is as something to pair new shows with. They'll probably attach Hell on Wheels or some other dreck to this season, and whatever dreck they come out with next season with the second half of season five. Like how they've paired season 5 of Mad Men, their strongest product, with season 2 of The Killing, probably their weakest. It's all part of traditional Nielsen oriented TV strategy, which means its totally misguided and missing the point of where entertainment consumption is headed. In a few years these ratings oriented dick moves will be obsolete, but until then it will probably get worse before it gets better--the final death throes of an outdated medium.

I'm very glad Gus is dead finally--he was around since the later parts of season 2, and one of the focuses of season 3, and then basically the main character of season 4. He was interesting, but not as interesting as the show thought he was.

Two thoughts on the poster:

1. He's wearing his work outfit. More cooking in this season? I wasn't particularly expecting that. Interesting...

2. Is the location of the poster relevant?

I normally don't look at things this closely, but this is Breaking Bad we're talking about.

Didn't realize that season 4 was out already.

Picked it up on blu ray earlier.

Fucking bullshit. This truly pisses me off. This is the only show I really follow anymore.

Assuming he's crying about the split season thing.
Or maybe, like me, he has Dish Network and just found out they're dropping AMC. But thank Christ I get to keep those 15 shopping channels that I'll never ever watch. Fucking bullshit. In the meantime they moved it to channel like 9600 so I had to search around for 5 minutes on the guide just to make sure I don't miss the Mad Men finale this week. Ponderous.

I gave up watching shows on AMC. For some reason, even on Fios HD, the picture is absolute garbage.
Blocky, derezzed, shitty over-compressed picture, and horrible refresh rates.
