HP Pavilion xt412

Tried doing a BIOS update because I was having problems getting it to recognize new memory (from Crucial)

I did a BIOS update, it got to writing block 8 of 8 then froze completely. Power button wouldnt respond. I ended up having to take the battery out.

Now, its dead. Completely. Will not turn on, not even the charging indicator light works.

I assume the BIOS is crapped. I took the mobo out and it has a plug-on type BIOS chip, not soldered.

Anybody have any experience in this type of stuff? Could I buy a preflashed chip online and just plug it in? Fuck HP and their shitty WinPhlash utility.

Here's a motherboard on eBay someone is selling for parts only, I guess the BIOS chip is on it - you can probably tell better than me since you pulled it apart already.

If you go this route and buy this motherboard to get the BIOS chip, reinstall the original RAM in your laptop when you replace the BIOS chip. Then try reflashing it again.

Cool, thanks - I've been researching this for hours and I came across those websites you mentioned and emailed them for quotes.

The shitty part is this isnt even my laptop. It's a customers, and all i was doing was a quick memory upgrade. A shitty $30 job is going to cost me unless for some rare reason she say's dont worry about it.

My only real concern is that Im not getting ANYTHING, not even the charging lights. Is that common to the bios?

So my plan of action is:

1. Try to get a new pre-flashed chip
2. Order a new mobo online - Compaq Presario 2100's are pretty much the same mobo, and they are about $100.
3. Order a brand new mobo for $239
4. Change my number.

Ah... the joys of working on someone else's stuff...

Fuck it, tell her the new BIOS chip was required for the RAM upgrade to work and make her pay for it. If a new chip is expensive, buy that motherboard on eBay for $20 and put the chip on and give the laptop back, and tell her you couldn't get the RAM upgrade to work.

Did you run the flash utility with the new RAM installed? I'm thinking that was the issue. I had that happen once during a BIOS flash. But, I got lucky and it locked up before it started the flash. I put the original RAM in and the flash utility worked fine. It was the same deal, I was doing the BIOS upgrade because the motherboard wouldn't recognize the new RAM.

Sweet!

I assume they flashed it to the new BIOS you were trying to upgrade to when you wiped out the chip?
