Broken Odometer

I noticed when I was driving to Athens, GA a few weeks ago that my odometer isn't working. I looked at online manuals on fixing it myself, but I fear messing up and having to replace the thing completely. Is it worth to go for it myself? How much are they usually worth? I figure they differ from model, I have a 1996 Sentra GXE. How much do they charge at shops normally?

My fear is I try to fix it myself and I mess up somewhere or do it wrong and not fix it.

Depends on what is wrong. If it's just the speed senor on the trans it won't
be alot. If it's the dash that could get pricey depending on wether it's an
analog dash or a digital one.
Does the speedo work correctly? If it does then it's probably in the dash.
If not, it could just be a faulty sensor.

Yes, the speedometer works fine, it's the dash that is giving me a problem. It's an analog.

By the way, is there any way I can figure out the actual mileage on the car? It's set on 89,404 right now.

The analog ones aren't too expensive but I doubt you will get the actual mileage
correct. I don't think the PCM on those cars saved the mileage. Newer models
do it but that might be a bit too early. Not totally sure though.
Things vary greatly as to what they were doing with PCM's in the mid 90's.

I got a CarFax report on the car and it seems that this is a recent problem.

I'll get it fixed when I have to money for it. Thanks for the help.

Sell it 5 years from now with only 89,000 original miles.
