Buying a New Computer, Maybe Wackbag Can Help Me

Same computer since 1999. I figure it's time to jump into "the future" I've been hearing about.

I only know how to fuck with computers, but have no clue what any of the numbers or stats mean. I have a grand, and I want a new one. Just curious if any of the Wackbaggers could compile a list of parts on NewEgg.com for me and save me some time. You're the only people I really trust.

What I'm Looking For:

First off, I download (legally, of course ;)) a lot, so I would love a decent hard drive. SIZE can be anything, I just want something that runs pretty good. 120GB is A-OK.

Also, I want to play a game that came out in the past three years. I've waited to see what games on PC look like, and I'm anxious.

Vista is fine. If XP is recommended, then I'll go with that. Please do not include a monitor in the list. I'll deal with that later.

So if someone can screen cap or use Adobe and compile me a wishlist from NewEgg.com, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you very much.

EDIT: This computer will be used also for audio editing and lots of video editing. Not CGI or anything, but yeah.

The point is, I want the best computer I can get within my budget.

I just built a new comp this spring. Vista is nice, I got Ultimate with 2GB of ram and it's great. If you could hold off for a bit I would though if you plan on gaming in the future. The current vid cards won't support the new Direct X versions, only the next gen will, and they won't be out until fall.

I can send you my specs if you want, my system (no monitor, printer, etc) was $1300. Don't buy one at Best Buy or anything like that, build one or have one built for you. You'll love it.

Yeah sure, send me the specs. I don't plan on gaming in the future, I just want to play some of the MMORPGs that currently exist. PM me or send the specs to periodrevival@msn.com.

looking into a decent, affordable laptop. Basically has to cruise the net and a few non graphically intense programs, plus movies. I am leaning towards one of those books that you can take hand written notes on.

Killer deals now on HP's with dual-core AMD's, 2GB of RAM, 200+ gb hard drive, DVD/RW, 17" screen, etc. You can get an amazing laptop for a little less than a grand.

I built a KILLER config that comes in right at $1001.25 including shipping.
I tried emailing the cart to you but Newegg says they are having server problems. I'll keep the cart and try again later. I saved it as a public wish list, but they don't seem to show up for a long time after it's created/saved/shared.

If you are serious about gaming make sure you grab the best card you can afford. Nothing below a Nvidia 8600GT. Ideally if you can spare it get an 8800 series. The new ATi 2900 512mb is an option. Get a minimum of 2gigs of RAM (3 is better, 4 better still). CPU-wise don't go nuts. A good mid range multicore will give you plenty of horsepower, no need to go top of the line.

OS- as much as people don't like it, go with Vista. Its here to stay whether you like it or not so you can either get used to it now or later when it'll just be more difficult to make the transition. Now i would NEVER suggest pirating Microsofts OS because they are simply so starved for cash. I would never reveal that there are builds of Vista Ultimate avaialble online that will allow full updates from MS etc just like the retail version. Nope, I wouldn't suggest that at all. Better to pay the $400 for the full version. Yup.

Good luck, Godspeed, etc. etc.

Would that be sufficient for games like Tabula Rasa or Conan? I have a dell XPS Gen II laptop at the moment, and that seems like the kind of desktop I could go for.

Holy shit, thanks for that info. That is way more research than most people would have done since I didn't give any in my post. If I wanted to improve game performance what would be the most important thing? RAM? Video Card?

4GB of RAM is the maximum memory that the 32bit copy of XP can handle. There is however a 2GB limit each application can have in the virtual address space.
BUT I have read a lot of worse experiences of Vista's gaming performance compared to XP's.

BUT new games will be made primarily for Vista...

As martianvirus implied, I would wait to get a new computer until the intel quadcores affected the market since the two games you mentioned are still in beta testing stage of development.

I think a balance between the two would be fine since you aren't probably going to be running other major applications while online MMORPG gaming. The major factor is always processor speed and now 32 vs 64 bit. RAM and graphic card size/speed is secondary. Speed of the hard drive can also affect your computer's performance. As well as other programs that extremely hog resources with little apparent benefit.

I bought this computer in July... and I don't know shit about computers. I set a price ($1500) and stayed within that. 4GB RAM, 250 GB HD, sweet video card, pretty sweet little machine. I just went onto HP.com and built it in 15 minutes. I haven't looked back, it's completely badass.

Edit: Oh yeah, Vista kicks ass.

The first question when shopping/building a computer: What is your budget?

You can have a wicked machine for the right price. And remember, you can go cheap on everything else, but your mother board and CPU. Make the MB and processor you big priority in you budget and you'll be happy.

And I want to though this out there: I firmly believe if you want to game in the current gen, don't spend $500 on a video card, buy and Xbox360.

There are hardly any exclusive PC games left or coming out (Crysis and Spore, that's about it). If you want to game on PC you need max RAM, max video card, max everything. If you want to pirate songs and work with audio and video, you just need to splurge on RAM, but you don't have to go over board.

For example: You can do video with 1GB of RAM. 4GB is a luxury. With PC gaming, 2GB+ of RAM is needed. Savvy?

The extra cores don't make that big of a difference if the games don't take advantage of it, and most don't. Just stick with a really good dual Core chip. All quad core chips are good for is driving down the prices dual core chips. Get a directX 10 card and Vista for games like Bioshock and Alan Wake. There is a huge difference. I tried bioshock with the same hardware and XP, then upgraded to Vista to use the directx10 on the card. Major improvment in graphics and game play.
