Can't believe there's no BluRay/HD-DVD argument here...

#1
The fanbois of both have gone completely out of control on other message boards... Why not here?

I just picked up an HD-DVD player with a dozen free movies from Amazon, so I've thrown my hat in that particular ring. Not a fanboi, but the free movies made it a "no-brainer" to go Toshiba's way.

I think most people are just waiting to see which really ends up on top so they can finally decide what to buy. Is there even really an argument to make about it?

I've downloaded one, Is there a place that a person can purchase these?

and FYI, the quality isn't as good as either HD-DVD or Blu Ray.

What the fuck's wrong with all you HD-DVD faggots? BluRay is where it's at, and if you had half a brain you'd be able to see that. :action-sm

why wouldn't one just buy a HD-DVD player and a PS3? Best of both worlds that way.

This argument is in the Computer forum is why there isn't one in the movies forum. It has been discussed and there isn't much argument. Blu-Ray has more movies to choose from and is getting more support right now from vendors, Hd-DVD has a cheapie box that people can add to their 360s. Now they are starting to release dual format players that play both so the argument is done now.

Blockbuster is going with Blu-ray, so for the moment, it seems to have the advantage for the people who still go out to the store for their rentals. That may counteract the awkward-name factor, since those are the same people who would think Blu-ray was a brand of sunglasses.

exFUCKINGactly Sony fucked up then, there going to do it again. simple as that. only thing sony was ever good for was the walkman. plus it comes down to what porn is coming out on... HD or BluRay

Here ya go... This is what I was hoping for. :haha7:

Oh, and Warfarer, the format war isn't truly "done" when the only dual-format players cost as much as TWO PS3's. Maybe when they are down around the $200-$250 point, which is probably not going to happen until well into 2009. That's when I will go

When you say Blu-Ray is "getting more support from vendors", what exactly do you mean? The vendors of the films (the studios) or the vendors who actually sell the players?

Or, more accurately, a PS3 and an XBox360 with an HD drive.

Either of the above choices assumes that you want to play games with your machine. I don't, so I won't buy one. There's also the point that game systems usually make for ponderous movie players and in the past had inferior performance and image quality when compared to anything but the cheapest dedicated DVD players. I don't know if this is still the case with the newest generation of game systems because I haven't researched it, but it did used to be the case.

Actually, Sony is also good for two huge advancements that blow the walkman out of the water. Sony and Phillips jointly built the first compact disc which is still used today. And I would put the original Playstation 1 in that class as well. I mean, that console sold a record 100+ million units, ended cartridge-based gaming, and helped knock Sega out of the industry (and took Nintendo down quite a bit).

As for the BluRay/HD argument...it's not a big deal to me. It will indeed come down to porn, I'm sure...and I think Sony has said they don't want the porn industry on bluray, so there ya go.

Even if Sony DID want the porn movies on Blu-Ray, there seems to be a good reason why it wouldn't end up on that platform regardless. If I understand it correctly (and I may not), the Blu-Ray discs require completely new manufacturing facilities and there are relatively few of them right now. The discs are more expensive to produce and Sony is probably capable of pressuring those producers into only making "regular" films... By comparison, HD-DVD can be produced by existing equipment, or at least in existing facilities with some modification, and likely has lower production costs. That may make all the difference with the porn movies.

I have heard that too, but also have heard the Sony people came out and completely denied saying that. Apparently remembering the beta mistake
