According to police records, the city witnessed 512 homicides in 2008. While the crime rate in Chicago is down this year, the murder rate is not. It is up 17 percent, with only a few days left until 2013. In the first three months of 2012 alone, the city saw the murder rate jump 60 percent. It then leveled off, but continued to be ahead of the 2011 rate. A shooting of a 40-year-old man on the West Side marked the 500th shooting. The man was shot in the Austin neighborhood Thursday night in the 4000 block of West Augusta. The victim has been identified as Nathaniel T. Jackson. Police are looking for a suspect.
