I know this has been covered on the Sports Board, in the Penn State thread, but a lot of the usual suspects don't pay attention to this stuff on a regular basis, and I figure this story has broader appeal.

Accusations of Child Sex, Cover-up Rock Penn State

By GENARO C. ARMAS and MARK SCOLFORO Associated Press
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. November 6, 2011 (AP)

An explosive sex abuse scandal and allegations of a cover-up rocked Happy Valley after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno's heir apparent, was charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over 15 years. Among the allegations was that a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the team's practice center in 2002.

Sandusky retired in 1999 but continued to use the school's facilities for his work with The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk kids, where authorities say he encountered the boys. The case took on added dimension Saturday when perjury charges were announced against Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. They were also accused of failing to alert police and other agencies — as required by state law — of their investigation of the allegations.

"This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys," state Attorney General Linda Kelly said Saturday in a statement.

Paterno, who last week became the coach with the most wins in Division I football history, wasn't charged, and the grand jury report didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.

"Joe Paterno was a witness who cooperated and testified before the grand jury," said Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office. "He's not a suspect."

Frederiksen called questions about whether Paterno might testify premature and speculation.

"That's putting the cart way ahead of the horse," he said. "We're certainly not going to be discussing the lineup of potential witnesses."

Under Paterno's four-decades-and-counting stewardship, the Nittany Lions became a bedrock in the college game, and fans packed the stadium in State College, a campus town routinely ranked among America's best places to live and nicknamed Happy Valley. Paterno's teams were revered both for winning games — including two national championships — and largely steering clear of trouble. Sandusky, whose defenses were usually anchored by tough-guy linebackers — hence the moniker "Linebacker U" — spent three decades at the school. The charges against him cover the period from 1994 to 2009.

Sandusky, 67, was arrested Saturday and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts. Curley, 57, and Schultz, 62, were expected to turn themselves in on Monday in Harrisburg.

The school said Sunday that it would bar Sandusky from campus.

The allegations against Sandusky, who started The Second Mile in 1977, range from sexual advances to touching to oral and anal sex. The young men testified before a state grand jury that they were in their early teens when some of the abuse occurred; there is evidence even younger children may have been victimized. Sandusky's attorney Joe Amendola said his client has been aware of the accusations for about three years and has maintained his innocence.

"He's shaky, as you can expect," Amendola told WJAC-TV after Sandusky was arraigned on Saturday. "Being 67 years old, never having faced criminal charges in his life and having the distinguished career that he's had, these are very serious allegations." (STORY CONTINUED AT LINK ABOVE)
I don't give Paterno a pass on this one: if you get a report like this, you don't just report it to your boss and leave it. Something like this, you go to the cops as well, which Joe didn't do for nine years.

This is ugly, ugly shit.

And on a purely selfish, horrible, nasty point of view, I'm now actually sad that UVa didn't hire Sandusky in 2000. They almost did, but ended up with Al Groh instead. As awesome as beating the shit out of Groh all those years was (with a single exception), this would have given VT fans ammunition against UVa for decades...

As is, only PSU fans are utterly humiliated in this situation.

Paterno better be in front of a podium tomorrow making an announcement that he is retiring/resigning/whatever.

This is horrendous.

A subject line with "Child Sex" in it, and it still took 23 minutes for Wackbag to respond.

Pretty much. There is no coming back from this and there is no excusing what Paterno did. All of sudden "tattoo gate" and Shapiro U don't look so bad.

It's a sunday afternoon. Most people aren't home or they're watching football.

Relax. ;)

And yeah, Joe doesn't look good in this one.
The school should be telling him to step up and resign in the morning.

As a PSU alum, I am absolutely horrified of what happened and ashamed at PSU's lack of action in stopping this monster when they could.

1. It defies decency what Sandusky did. Forget using "alleged"...that many kids, over that many years, with eyewitnesses leads me to believe at least some of that is true. Sandusky was not Michael Jackson and rich beyond belief which made him a blackmail target. Hell, Michael Jackson's accusations seem actually harmless compared to what Sandusky did. He is a fucking monster who preyed on 10 year old boys who came from troubled backgrounds. A bullet in his head would be too good for him.

2. The thing with Paterno that is unknown is what he tried to do behind the scenes other than contact his superiors. If all he did was report it to the AD and left it at that, considering the Graduate Asst that found Sandusky anal ****** a boy in the shower is still on his staff and serves as a reminder, that Paterno has some serious moral delinquencies for not reporting this directly to the police. I know he knew Sandusky for years and he did not witness the **** firsthand but just what the GA said alone should have been enough to get the police involved. Not having done so put more kids in Sandusky's grasp over the next 7 years.

3. The AD Curley needs to be gone tomorrow and the fact PSU is payingfor the legal bills is appalling.

You wonder if Paterno's whole "1950s' attitude" he has is the reason why he didn't report it to the cops.

That is appalling that PSU is paying for Curley's legal bills.

This is a message Penn State sent out to us on Facebook.

Tim Curley and Gary Schultz have engaged their own attorneys. The allegations concern how they fulfilled their responsibilities as University employees so the university is paying for their counsel. The University has insurance for its leadership team that covers this type of legal funding.
I guess that makes me feel somewhat better that tuition and alumni donations aren't going toward their defense.

On the staff, fuck. Everyone knows it was Mike McQueary who was the witness. It's not like McQueary is hard to spot, for fuck's sake.

And Sandusky's kept his office in the football offices until very recently. McQueary has to have seen Sandusky on a daily or at most a weekly basis for the last nine years. McQueary is PSU's fucking recruiting coordinator, for fuck's sake. It's McQueary's job to go out there and convince 17 year old boys to go to Penn State. Everything I've heard about McQueary says he's a good guy (same was said about Sandusky, of course, but I choose to believe Mike is a good guy: I knew a girl who dated him for a while), so how does a guy whose job is to relate with young men like that stand being around Sandusky all these years?

There is some seriously troubling stuff at PSU, man.

Unacceptable. That still completely debases Wackbag's sterling reputation.

Now, if you were actually fucking a child and couldn't get to it in time, that's fits the WB rep much, much better.

I hate to say this about McQueary, but I think he must have got a nice fat raise to keep his mouth shut. The first couple of times that he saw Sandusky, it must have made him sick to his stomach. You would think that eventually that disgust would turn to anger and he would want to knock the shit out of him.

He was a graduate assistant (ie- minimum wage bitch coach) when the incident happened, and he's now PSU's recruiting coordinator.

That said, from what I hear, McQueary more or less earned his promotions. I can't explain any of this shit, though.

Look, I'm not a Penn State fan. When you grow up in the shadow of a school like Penn State, you either grow up loving it or hating it. I was the latter. But dammit, you HAVE to respect Penn State. Don't get me wrong: there's a lot of bullshit that I'm aware of that Penn State does. Paterno still negative recruits black kids from the South telling them that southern universities are horrendously racist towards black kids. Because Pennsylvania universities are much better, right? That said, within their lights, Penn State is a stand up program. They work hard to do things the right way. They expect things to be done the right way.

This isn't the right way to do things by a long, long, long shot. That's what's so crazy about it. If there were a pattern of trouble, I could see it. But this is like a perfectly level plan, total flatlands for thousands of miles, and in the middle of it is a 2 mile tall mountain out of nowhere, and this is the first time any of us have seen it until now.

As a PSU alum, I don't really give a shit. I'm as indifferent regarding this as I am the next pedo story.

Paterno's actions, as reported by the AP yesterday, were completely reasonable and what anyone would expect. Attack him for his terrible coaching these days. not for this bull.

I would expect the face of an university to do the right thing and inform the authorities of what he was told. I think any rationale thinking person would expect the same. If I'm going to hold the Catholic Church to to these standards, I'm going to do the same for a college football coach. No matter who he is. Especially one who at times has appeared to have a holier than thou attitude.

You also bring up Paterno's terrible coaching. Well couldn't one say the that two are related. They both show lack in judgement.

If a co-worker came to me and said that they saw an ex-co-worker in a suggestive position with a minor at the work place I would do the same thing, report it to my manager. It's not my job to deal with this shit. Nor is it my job to report it to the police either, that's for the co-worker to do.
