Christmas parade organizers mull ways to curb public disapproval

James Forrester, of Save Me from the Fire ministry, riding in a truck at the Main Street Crestview Christmas Parade, drew criticism for derogatory remarks.

CRESTVIEW — Designating Christmas parade participants’ positions and providing a roster of entrants to the public are two ways the Main Street Crestview Association may curb patrons’ disappointment with controversial entrants, members said Wednesday.
The committee plans to speak with city attorney Jerry Miller and city council members before making formal decisions on the matter.
Members evaluated last weekend’s parade, which drew criticism from a number of News Bulletin readers offended by Save Me from the Fire ministry’s truck. Student minister James Forrester shouted disparaging remarks about homosexuals, said Santa Claus isn’t real and damned parade attendees to hell.
Following the parade, the News Bulletin’s website, crestviewbulletin.com, and its Facebook page received hundreds of comments expressing outrage from the incident. The Main Street Crestview Association’s City Hall-based office also has received comments from concerned residents.
"We didn't want people to think that we are just going to turn a blind eye to this," Main Street member Rae Schwartz said. " I came with some concerns and I want to help fix it."
Other members at Wednesday’s meeting included Main Street President Ellis Conner, Patti Gonzo, Viola Owens, Cal Zethmayr and Pat Hollarn.
The group discussed possible steps to prevent a similar situation from happening at future Christmas parades.
Zethmayr suggested changing the application’s wording.
"We should put in the application for next year that (Main Street Association) has the right to designate in where any unit goes, period." Zethmayr said. "Accept it or don't be in the parade."
Zethmayr suggested making the roster of entrants, by order of procession, available to the public, so people could leave if they disagreed with an organization’s message.
"You can't legally restrict anybody (from being in the parade), because you are going to put the city in a lawsuit," he said, referencing conclusions he arrived at from discussions with city council members. “It's the city's parade that we organize."
All members wanted to avoid violating the First Amendment, which could lead to legal action.
"I think that we can reasonably say or determine the placement of those units at the end of the parade," Conner said.
Hollarn said Conner's idea might not work.
"This situation had to be handled carefully; that's why we need to work with the city council," she said.
Hollarn said she was horrified when she had heard what had happened.
"This is part of Crestview becoming bigger," she said. "This is probably only the beginning of certain things like this happening."
Still, each organization should receive the same courtesy, she said, adding, "Not one moment of hostility can be shown towards any group.”
And Save Me from the Fire is one group that definitely plans to return next year. Forrester on Monday announced on the News Bulletin’s Facebook page that he would return.
Wednesday, the Washington-based ministry released a statement on its website, savemefromthefire.org, condemning Crestview residents.
“Your controversy is with the Lord God, not with us,” Brian Gaines, a Pensacola student minister, said. “We faithfully spoke the truth according to His word in your fair town knowing that it pleased God.”

Yeah but see the city is looking at ways to put assholes at the end of the parade, and let folks know when they are coming. Give parents time to shoo the children away,. Don't want to upset asshole's 1st amendment rights.

Serves them right for having a parade.

There's been a bit of a stink about this asshat locally. Crestview is already making noise about reviewing who they let into the parade next year.

They already know he's coming back... they are looking at ways to put him and his ilk at the end of the parade as to not upset his first amendment rights.

Translation: next year's parade will be cancelled so they can't be sued.

I didn't think anybody could be any douchier than an atheist at a Christmas parade.
How about a Christian out Trick or Treating?

Is it douchey to celebrate Halloween if you don't believe in ghosts and The Great Pumpkin?

I meant more the "militant" atheist types. I got no problem with the Christians who send their kids out trick or treating as long as they're not trying to ruin everyone else's fun by trying to get it banned like atheists do with Christmas. I don't even mind the occasional "Jesus Loves You" pamphlets the bible-thumpers throw into my kid's pillow case.

I think a better comparison would be Christians out picketing Halloween and trick or treaters.

Atheists AT a Christmas parade, and atheists picketing or trying to ban a Christmas parade are two very different things.

Christmas is about as Christian in the US today as Halloween is Satanic, and no atheists are trying to ban Santa Claus.

And most atheists don't give two shits about Christmas parades because they understand that the Christian has been so watered down in Christmas that it's barely visible anymore. The only time atheists will give a shit is when the Christians get all thumpy and try to shove Jesus back into Christmas in displays on public property... and yes... the atheists who get upset about even that are dicks. And the atheists who get upset about Christmas trees like they're some sort of religious symbols are massive dicks.

Here's the difference...

-If the asshole atheists had their way... Christmas would be 98% the same as it is today, and 100% fun.

-If the preachy Jeebusers had their way... Christmas would be 2% the same as it is today, and 100% awful.
