Kentucky Clerk Who Won't Give Marriage Licenses To Same-Sex Couples Is Going To Jail
Kim Davis says she's listening to "God's authority."

WASHINGTON -- The Kentucky county clerk who rose to prominence for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is now headed to jail.

A federal judge on Thursday ordered Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis to be jailed for contempt of court. She has waged a personal war against the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

Davis first defied an order by Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear (D) for clerks to follow the law. After she was sued in federal court for her noncompliance and ordered to issue marriage licenses, Davis refused again. She sought a delay of that order and lost, so she brought her pleaall the way to the Supreme Court, which this week effectively required her to comply.

She has since continued to defy the order, citing "God's authority."

The Guardian reported that U.S. District Judge David Bunning said during a court hearing Thursday that Davis would be jailed until she complied with his order to issue licenses. She was led from the courtroom by a U.S. marshals.

The same-sex couple suing Davis asked Bunning to hold her in contempt, but recommended financial penalties, not jail time. Davis argued in a court filing on Wednesday that it was impossible for her to authorize same-sex marriage licenses because the action "irreparably and irreversibly violates her conscience."

She also argued that there were "less restrictive alternatives" to a contempt ruling. She suggested she could deputize someone else to issue marriage licenses for her, or that the state could call a special legislative session on the issue.

Davis is an unlikely symbol of the conservative effort to claim religious freedom exemptions in response to the Obergefell ruling. She has garnered support from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). On the Hill, Republicans are backing legislation that bars the federal government from taking discriminatoryaction against a person or corporation acting in accordance with a religious belief against same-sex marriage. Some conservatives have gone so far as to endorse civil disobedience as a response to the ruling.

As the New York Times reported, Davis is not the only government official who has taken a personal stand. She is joined by a clerk in Irion County, Texas, and a probate judge in Washington County, Alabama. But these pockets of resistance remain small. The nation has overwhelmingly moved to allow all Americans to marry the people they love.

If God didn't strike the Supreme Court dead for saying the gays can marry, maybe God doesn't give a fuck about who marries who.

Saying you're doing something because of "god's authority" is like not getting a kid a toy because of Santa's list. Crazy, imaginary bullshit.
She should actually be committed instead of jailed. If I did something under Hunter P Terwillinger's (my imaginary accountant/fairy grandfather)will, I'd be in a nut house.
So, in summation, god isn't real and she's a cunt best removed from society.
The adamant belief in imaginary beings should be classified as a mental illness.

Another democrat in jail. She wouldn't let her assistants sign licenses either. You can stand for your own religious beliefs but you can't make other people stand for them either.

While I don't agree with this kook myself, you know damn well that if this chick went to jail for a leftist cause, she'd be made a hero.

That's the thing. She really is a leftist. Just because she's an old bigot doesn't mean she's not a lefty.

Oh yeah? Funny how that little fact doesn't get a mention on social media.

Is that an elected position? If so, I can see her getting thrown in jail, but if not she should just be fired.

Yeah, she's elected. The deputy clerks are hired. They could have done the job and she would have been right by her god. This is the wrong place to fight this fight.

Those on the left elected her. As one that leans in that direction, this hyperbole is trite and too often applied by either side. Logical fallacies are such a bore.

Religion is a brokedown feeling or thought process. Nothing more. Fundamentalism in any form exhibits symptoms similar enough to the mentally ill to be classified as such, but we never will. People on the left will get butthurt if we classify Islam as a mental disorder with the same furious, angry tears as the right would if we classified Christianity as a disorder. Two sides, same crazy ass coin.

If your religion prevents you from giving marriage licenses to gay people, don't take that job. If your beliefs prevent you from giving someone a gun license, don't take that job. If your job description suddenly changes and you're expected to do something that "violates your conscience", get over it and do your job, step down so someone else can, or face consequences for staying in your position and refusing to perform your duties. If you're dumb enough to be a government employee refusing someone a constitutional right based on your feelers, you deserve the consequences no matter what side you're on, regardless of the right you're denying. It's that simple. Making this even more divisive just smacks of a tantrum brewing.

It's an elected position, and she was given a chance to correct her behavior. She then refused to issue licenses at all. She violated multiple court orders, sometimes a consequence of that is going to jail.

This should have been resolved by simply impeaching her for dereliction of duty the first time she refused.

Boom, done.

You missed the final "if."

She took the SO she could refuse. I have no doubt this was her agenda all along.
