Dead Batteries Aren't Much Fun

I parked car in the garage and left the dome light on....for 4 days. Now the fucker won't start. I put the 50A quick start on it and my battery charger basically said "nope" and switched to the 2A mode. (i have one of those Shumacher $150 smart chargers). So I put the fucker on 10A and checked on it an hour later, it said the battery was charged....NOPE. Car wouldn't start.

I'm thinking about just jumping it and letting it run for awhile. The battery is about a year old, but I'm afraid if I shut the car off tonight it will be dead. A battery for the car is not cheap, $150 for a good brand or $239 for an Optima Blue Top.

Should I just bite the bullet and get a new battery?? The idea of shutting it off, then having it not start and having to put it on a tow truck while I'm on duty doesn't sound so good either.

Take the battery to work. Stop someone for a ginned up offense. Impound their car and have them hauled off to jail. While waiting for the tow truck, switch batteries out and viola! you are good to go.

Take the State Police salary of yours and just go buy a new battery.

This.

Nah, the shop that takes care of my car is bringing me a loaner battery. They say mine should still be good but needs a long slow charge or to be hooked up to a good battery that is hooked up to a slow charger.

I figured a 50/50 on somebody picking up the reference to the "dead puppies" song. Bravo.

fuck the battery....... I might be flying out to Omaha with a buddy to pick up a Porsche. What are the chances of getting a police escort?

Wait -- is this on your car or your cruiser? I would think you'd have access to all sorts of police mechanical goodies.

Why wouldn't you just take it back under the warranty? Lead car batteries aren't like cell phone batteries, once you drain them completely like that you've damaged it.

Usually a good battery will have at least a year or 2 free replacement
before the prorating kicks in. They should replace it for free.

Gotta go buy a battery for the wife's car... It's the original battery from 2006 (2007 model year).

That's not bad. If you can get a battery to last 5 years, you got a good one. The longest I have ever gotten a battery to last on a personal vehicle is maybe 4 years. I put an Optima Red in my pick up and it died in less then three years. I don't give a shit what they put in my work car. It's the taxpayers money and the state is damn good at squeezing a dime until it bleeds .13 cents.

The longest i have got out of a battery was a old diehard from the early 80's it didn't have a hold down on one time it fell against the fan and it cut a hole in it i put duct seal over the hole and filled it with water the battery lasted till it was about 10 years old.

I squeezed almost 2 more months out of the battery in the Accord.

I had to go out at 1130 last night and jump it. My stepson was out in it and it wouldn't start.

Called around this morning and got prices... Sears and Kmart were about $100. Autozone and Advanced Auto were like $90-$95.

Costco FTW! $65... 100 month warranty, 36 month free replacement.

I took a 10mm deep well socket and ratchet with me, changed it in the parking lot, went back in and got the core charge back.
