You know Mayr's drunk when he's reading The Weekly Standard. :icon_cool

But I'd have to agree with the Dem congressman. Everyone's got a spin, everyone has an agenda, and everyone is driven by ratings. Congress was doing some pretty stupid shit 30 years ago too though. It just gets amplified a bazillion times today because communication is so much more advanced. I mean we had TV news, newspapers, mail, and landline telephone back then. Now we've added the Internet, social networking, cable TV news...people can actually cause a stir on certain issues and manipulate the political process from the comfort of their own couch. Much different.

Finally, a thread started by Mayr that I can actually agree with! ;)

The congressman sounds butthurt. I think Democrats have gotten dumber, but conservatives have gotten smarter. Thirty years ago they had hardly any news outlets or ways to get out their message.

First it was AM talk radio exploding, then Fox, and now the internet. They used to have to rely on church groups and small publications and Op-Eds to organize and inform, now they have gotten highly sophisticated new media that they're mastering.

And for as much bitching as I do about them I still think they're for the most part the more honest side most of the time.

That's why World War Z impacted me so much (holy shit, a zombie apocalypse book used to make a point about contemporary politics... Here goes nothing). In that book, it really showed how bad things need to get for humanity as a whole for us to change in the profound way that we all want it too. It would literally take a global catastrophe on the scale of a zombie apocalypse to "reboot" human society into a different mode of action. I just hope that when it happens (yes, not if but when), it is something that we can weather...

    Dear Mr. Soros,

OAPC needs a software update. Please send the chopper to his address so we can download and install the latest Soros Mind-Programming software in OAPC.

    Thanks pookie!

Actually, what happened is that your precious "broadcast licenses" have become irrelevant.

Do you think that overall Democrats are just more disorganized and chaotic? For example, it seems that they're more "selfish" regarding their personal major issues, which gets in the way of them uniting under a common cause. They are the first to take to something new like the internet, but utilize it in a pretty individual way. Conservatives took longer to catch up, but they almost have more of a "business plan" for how they utilize it.

I think it's reflected in the Tea Party vs Occupy movements. The Tea Party was universally against government spending and higher taxes, with a slight deviance near the end towards 2nd Amendment rights.

Meanwhile the OWS movement started as a call for the 1% contributing more... then it degraded to protesting the banks and Wall Street. Then legalizing marijuana, gay marriage, education funding, pro-choice, feminism, anti-globalization, illegal immigration, etc all became issues of it. And of course in some instances further individual desires were represented in the thefts, *****, & looting. I actually agree with them on some issues, but they lack any ability to focus as a group.

Alright, done rambling. I'm tired and a little buzzed.

Clearly. Back in the day, Ackerman used to be a semi-regular caller on O&A. Now, he'd get shouted down by Ant.

Definitely. That's why I kept saying nothing useful would materialize out of the OWS movement. I think the organizational skills learned early on in families with strong business or religious foundations helps conservatives with structure later on in life; especially when compared to the "free-thinking" mindset of the liberal mentality.

I don't know if "smarter" is a proper term. I think a lot of Conservatives just found their mouthpieces and began to effectively parrot points that make sense to them. I think a lot of them still lack critical thinking and judgement skills. Whether it be the guy who listens to Rush and proceeds to send out mass emails based on what he's heard or the Tea Party protestor who is rallying against universal healthcare but wants government to leave her Medicare alone.

And before I unleash the war dogs that are Don and Dave, I don't think any of this applies to anyone here who's obviously exposed to both sides of the arguments and generally tends to seek out their own answers without having it spoon-fed to them.

And yes, Democrats have gotten dumber too. Idiocracy is only a few years away in this country.

Even if conservatives aren't more intelligent, I think what OAPC is getting at is the methods in which they organize and present their message is smarter. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that liberal causes are largely emotional, while conservative causes are more pragmatic. The arguments are often "we should spend this money because these people need help" vs "we simply can't afford to spend this money". You can even see the difference with libertarians, who support liberal concepts like gay marriage and legalizing marijuana, but often do it from a much more logical standpoint.

When you're emotional & passionate you have the ability to get people riled up to join the cause (OWS) but not the ability to provide any organization or direction (Tea Party). What happens when you find someone who can accomplish both those things? The Holocaust.

    Well, that was short-lived. :icon_cool

People, in general, are incredibly stupid...especially when it comes to politics. At least alot of us do research on our own and can find the truth pretty easily, whether we like to hear the truth or not. But it's obvious to politicians and special interests, all across the political spectrum, that people can be "bought". It's way easier for any of them to say, "Hey, you want freebies and handouts? Great, here you go...make sure you vote for me or support my cause and I'll make sure there's more comin!" instead of, "We're still in a crisis and we're giving way too many freebies and handout to people like you. We need to cut back tremendously...so vote for me/support my cause!" That's the big reason why we're in the fuckin debt mess we're in now. Everybody thinks "in the now" and aren't willing to deal with our unsustainable long term problems. Or, perhaps if you're to the far left...you're hoping the bottom falls out from under us and they can finally build us that socialist utopia they've all been dreaming about.

And the media certainly doesn't help either. They play the game for the ratings and influence.
