Anybody watch the HBO special on Don Rickles that's playing this month?

He insults everyone. Calls them fags, colored fellas, Japs, wops, spicks, etc.

I wonder how he gets away with it in this day and age of PC.
(Not that I care) Is he just 'grandfathered' in?

Just wondering

I think he has taken a hit in this era, but was huge in his day and is still funny. I don't think he cares what people think of him, so he has not tamed his act down.:clap:

Your inability to spell racial slurs is depressing.

Nobody better then Don. Met him in Vegas a few times, seen him perform front stage and been have ripped on by him.
Didn't know about the HBO thing. Gotta go TIVO.

Oh and one of the coolest things I own is a signed Casino (movie script) by him.

I've watched his special a couple times, it's pretty good. It's more of a biography than a stand up thing.

Rickles is great. In the early 80's he hosted SNL once and I'll never forget him coming on stage to do his monologue after they introduced him and he's standing on stage for a minute then reacts wildly to an audience member and they cut to the audience and there is this punk rock chick w/like a purple mohawk sitting in the 5th row and he proceeds to insult the shit out of her off the top of his head. I couldn't find a video of this, if anyone finds it post it, it was hysterical

Isn't that amazing? Rickles made fun of everyone regardless of their sex, nationality or religion. And everyone laughed. He called people Polacks and the Poles laughed. The Italians didn't mind being called WOPS, the Jews didn't mind being stereotyped as cheap, and even the blacks laughed at his stereotypes of them.

What happened to this country that if Rickles was just coming onto the scene now he'd be picketed by every ethnic & religious group imaginable? Could you imagine how busy Rev. Al would be?

Pretty sad commentary on the direction this country is headed if you ask me

Don was working blue before they had a name for it. He is one of the funniest motherfuckers to ever hit the stage-- I saw him several times live and seriously was crying with laughter at the shit he was saying. Total genius. Catch him in Kelly's Heroes sometime.

I can't really add much to what's already been said except that Rickles was great in Dirty Work. Especially in the outtakes, or the scene where he's leaving a message for Artie.

When Rickles hosted SNL back in 1984, he killed. He was the best host they have ever had, IMO. I have not found any of those clips on Youtube. I think I still have some on tape. Perhaps I will try to get some up.

I'm embarrassed to say I'd never really been exposed to Don Rickles before I watched this special this morning. That's a funny fucking guy and I'm ashamed of myself that I hadn't sought out some of his shows sooner

I don't give a shit this thread is 6 months old. I was too lazy to find a different one, if there is one.

I just started watching Mr. Warmth, and 11 minutes in, he does a bit with a German guy in the front row, surprised that his name is Frank and not some stereotypical German name, then does the goose step and asks if that makes him feel comfortable.

Wait until Jimmy's comedy show comes on HBO in September. Dice does the same fucking bit.

Well they talked about Don doing it on the radio show. No mention of Dice doing it. Are you sure it was a goose step or was it a duck waddle?
