I know one's gotta be Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt".

Hearing Black Sabbath's "Over and Over" from "Mob Rules" always makes me feel a bit morose.

Over and Over

Sometimes I feel like I'm dying at dawn
And sometimes I'm warm as fire
But lately I feel like I'm just gonna rain
And it goes over, and over, and over again, yeah

Too many flames, with too much to burn
And life's only made of paper
Oh, how I need to be free of this pain
But it goes over, and over, and over, and over again

Yeah, sometimes I cry for the lost and alone
And for their dreams that will all be ashes
But lately I feel like I'm just gonna rain
And it goes over, and over, and over, and over again

The most drearyiest song I've ever heard was that horrible cover of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. Doesn't he realize you can't turn a rock song into a country song? Oh wait, he's dead. I STILL don't get what's so special about that song. Is it because it came out like the day before he died?

A top contender i would think.

Eleanor Rigby

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?

Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care ?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?

There is thread for 80's, dreary, lyrics, depressing, jam band, ect...but i didn't see a thread for "best" song.

Behind Blue Eyes - The Who.
Close,but naaaahhh.Hand of doom?

Whatcha gonna do?
Times caught up with you
Now you wait your turn
You know theres no return

Take your written rules
You join the other fools
Turn to something new
Now its killing you

First it was the bomb
Vietnam napalm
Disillusioning
You push the needle in

From life you escape
Realitys that way
Colours in your mind
Satisfy your time

Oh you, you know you must be blind
To do something like this
To take the sleep that you dont know
Youre giving death a kiss, oh, little fool now

Your mind is full of pleasure
Your bodys looking ill
To you its shallow leisure
So drop the acid pill,

Dont stop to think now

Youre having a good time baby
But that wont last
Your minds all full of things
Youre living too fast

Go out enjoy yourself
Dont bottle it in
You need someone to help you
To stick the needle in, yeah

Now you know the scene
Your skin starts turning green
Your eyes no longer seeing
Lifes reality

Push the needle in,
Face deaths sickly grin
Holes are in your skin,
Caused by deadly pin

Head starts spinning round
You fall down to the ground
Feel your body heave
Deaths hands starts to weave

Its too late to turn
You dont want to learn
Price of life you cry
Now youre gonna die!

The dreariest, darkest mainstream album ever. From beginning to end, there is no single moment of joy.

"It doesn't matter if we all die"

Great choice!

My personal choice would be "Asleep" by The Smiths....

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Sing to me
Sing to me
I don’t want to wake up
On my own any more
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Bye bye

or... "Black Peter" by The Grateful Dead"

All of my friends come to see me last night,
I was laying in my bed and dying.
Annie Bonneau from St. Angel say the weather down there so fine.
Just then the wind came squalling through the dark,
But who can the weather command?
Just want to have a little peace to die,
And a friend or two I love at hand.
Fever roll up to a hundred and five.
Roll on up, gonna roll back down.
One more day I find myself alive,
Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground.
See here how everything led up to this day,
And it's just like any other day that's ever been.
Sun going up and then the sun going down.
Shine through my window and my friends they come around,
Come around, come around.
The people might know, but the people don't care,
That a man can be as poor as me.
Take a look at poor Peter, he's lying in pain,
Now let's come run and see, run and see,
Run and see, run, run and see, and see.

Both are extreme downer tracks, but among my favorites.

"Come Back" and "Sad" by Pearl Jam. "Sad" is an uptempo rock song and "Come Back" is a pretty straightforward slow, depressing old 60s R&B-style song; but both are about someone whose wife/girlfriend died and left him all alone.

Actually, "Other Side" is another one by them that's depressing, but it's from the perspective of the person who is dead and alone in the afterlife without the surviving spouse. It's pretty creepy-sounding.

my choice is "metaphor" by in flames

You stole my pure intention
You are the sickness in between
Let me in, I'll bury the pain

You taught me to be sad at you
You almost made me take it all
Let me in, I'll bury the pain

You bend me and you shake me
You beg me then you break me
Let me in, I'll bury the pain

You made me feel like a sinner
Now you fear you'll die alone
Let me in, I'll bury the pain

The sickness that you are
The plague that made me starve
You think you can show me how I've come this far

I feel it's taking over
Everything falls dark
Break me open
The desperate cry

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper
Blink 182 - Adam's Song
Good Charlette - Day That I Die

All involve death, suicide, ect.
The good charlette song is pretty fucking emo though.
