So I'm here in New Mexico at the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort and casino. I've never gambled before at a casino since I just turned 21 in July. As a first timer, I don't want to get burned. I'm just thinking of going for black jack and slots. I don't know how to play anything else. I stink at poker. So what do you all recommend? How should I approach the gambling? I don't have a lot of money ($400+) so I can't bet big or else I'll lose everything in a few hours. I also don't want to look like a douche/rookie approaching the black jack tables.

Play some roulette, just bet on something simple such as red or black; or odd/even. You can play for awhile that way.

And the folks at the blackjack table can be pricks, thinking you're a rookie and roooning their hand... *cough* Cumia!... ahem.. scuse me.

Watch the Blackjack tables before you sit down, and try and get a feel of what is going on. Are a lot of people up or down? Watch how they play, feel comfortable before sitting down and betting.

I would have suggested poker, but, sounds like you are not into that.

Good luck!

As a first timer, don't go in with the mindset you're going to win big; just tell yourself you're there for sheer entertainment. I'd go with roulette myself. It's inexpensive and spreads your money out over a good period of time. Good luck!

Go with roulette. You cannot hope to win against a rigged slot machine.

I've spent some time up in the casinos in Ruidoso.

Honestly, especially at that Mountain Gods one you mentioned, I wouldn't play anything but Poker. Everything seems slanted WAY towards the house, even more-so than regular Vagas/Shreveport type casinos.

watch the slots ... they're addicting as hell because you're always thinking the next one will be the big one. A friend of mine lost $300 that way. Me, I limit myself to maybe $50 on one machine. If I haven't hit by that number I walk.

I don't event think the little Casinos up in Ruidoso where he is have craps or roulette.

They're little Indian casinos, basically a room full of slots with a few Blackjack tables and maybe 3 or so poker tables that rarely have games going.

they do have all of the games mentioned. All of the table games are packed!!! I'm planning on 5 min. Blackjack to see how I do. I do enjoy poker but I'm not good at it. I'll get pwned. Hard. I just spent $40 on slots and feel guilty as fuck.

Best advice is right here bro. I am a gambler and have always played black jack. The last few years I have tried some new games, like craps, Spanish 21, etc.

Find the cheapest table $5 or $10 hopefully. If you know a little about black jack, then start there.

Sit down and tell the dealer you are new and learning. They will gladly help you. Just remember to toss them a couple of bucks, even if you lose.

The dealers always want to help new players and even old players.

The catch is you need to listen to their advise. They have seen it all and they want you to win. They get better tips if you win.

That does not mean you will win, but you will learn the right way to play.

Good luck. In my experience its idiots like you that always win.

Enjoy.

Last time I was there the bigger casino was having work done, I guess they expanded it to include more of a casino. The rooms I saw when I was there a few years ago barely passed as a full casino, it was pretty pathetic, heh.

Most players at the minimum tables won't get as excited as the "fancy" men at the higher limits. Take the advice here. Watch a bit before you play, $5 min bet, and let it be known that its your first time sitting down at a casino table. Most will be helpful and understanding. Enjoy. Dopie Opie is right, seems the less someone knows the more they win.. Hope its true.

I did exactly that today. My first table was this talkative dealer. At first she was annoying but then she started to help another guy and me. Telling us when to double down, split, and when to hit and not to hit vs. her show card. The first set of games I put down $60 (I had spent $40 on slots) in a minimum $5 bet. I lasted a good 3 and a half hours. I learned alot along the way and even said that I picked up pretty fast. I rested a while. Grabbed a drink and decided to go to a different $5 blackjack table. I put down $90. I lasted 2 hours and left with $130. I won $40 back of what I spent. So it puts me at $60 under in total. I'll play again tomorrow and should do better then how I started off today because now I've got the hang of it...I hope... Thanks for all the advice guys. I could use more. The roulette and craps table looks fun but get lost even watching it.

LOL, one of my friends from work is a pretty big AC gambler. Not Ant big (who is?), but compared to most, plays a lot at $1 slots. The first time we finally got him to come with us to the Meca (Vegas baby), after we check in we went our separate ways. Me and my wife went to sleep by the pool, and my buddy says he is going up to the room for a nap (we took the first flight from JFK, so it was about 11:30am Vegas time). About five/five thirty the wife and I decide to go up to shower and start calling everyone to see what we where doing for dinner. We run into my friend at the elevators. I asked him how his nap was, he tells me he has not even got to his room yet. I say WTF where you doing? and he says "playing". I asked him how he did and he told me he was down $2,500. The Mirage had taken $2,500 before he even saw his room. And to make matters worse, the dope had yet to see a slot host to get a card.

By the way dude, whatever you do, don't bet a dime before you get a players card. Even if you play penny slots, you will get some room discounts in the mail/email.

Murphy's law dude...

My girlfriend's older sister tells her I'm a loser because it's taken me over a year to sell my house in this depressed market. She's a nurse, I was in real estate for the last 4 years. She knows jack shit about real estate. My girlfriend knows she knows jack shit about real estate.

She decides to sell her house and has an offer for full ask within 24 hours of that lucky bitch's listing hitting MLS. Other houses on her street have been for sale for 6+ months, but she got lucky, so she thinks she knows it all.
