I feel your pain. We usually get around $100-$150 which I count on to buy gifts with. This year we got a $25 gift card to the grocery store.

Things here are changing & I'm not sure I'm happy about it. I liked not having reporting deadlines, but now they want to report MONTHLY. That raise & bonus better be nice or I'm outta here.

My Christmas bonus...

at the end of every year we'd get to order safety shoes. Uncomfortable, make-your-feet-sweat-and-stink, safety shoes. I'd order the $150 Doc Martens, sell them on e-bay for $120, and then I'd buy a pair of "work shoes"(comfy black sneakers) at Wal Mart for $20...

bingo! $100 Christmas bonus.

You guys are all complaining over your Christmas bonuses? I don't get a Christmas bonus. And as a public employee who hears more than once a day that you fuckers pay my salary, I'm putting you all on notice - I want a raise and a bonus next year.

oh. so you want to start throwing that around, enjoy your paid off banker's holidays' so how was your marten luther koon day off? or columbus day? or election day? or presidents day? so how was your vacation in fla this year?

you dont get an xmass bonus because your sucking off the collective tit of the tax payer's and get all the perks that go along with that kind of job. i get an "end of year" bonus because i grossed my employer over 500k last year, took only one sick day, because i sprained my ankle, and 3 days of vacation. ;)

if your pissed because you don't get a "Christmas bonus" remember that those of us who do, make a lot of sacrifices during the year to earn it.
im not trying to be a dick, but ive had this argument with my wife several times, she also gets no "bonus" but gets way more perks than i could ever imagine, hell she can call out "sick" gets vacation, gets paid for "training" "continued education" reimbursement, and a COL raise every year, the one thing that she doesn't get that pisses me off is that she doesn't get a uniform allowance or uniform service (she's an ICU nurse) that pisses me off more because of the fact that she works with sick people and should not be forced to bring that home on her clothes with her

This is an argument that will never ever be won by either side. You in the private sector think that those of us in the public sector are overpaid and over compensated while we think that we're underpaid. Compared to our counterparts in the private sector we are underpaid. But, yes, if you add what you call perks into the equation, we come out about even.

I can't speak for all bargaining units, but I can tell you that the employees of the NYS Unified Court System do not receive COL adjustments. We do not get paid for "training" nor do we receive a "continued education" reimbursement - I have to take a course in order to hopefully pass the court clerk's exam and that's $350 out of my pocket. Even though there are different bargaining units within the system, our contracts all expired March 31, 2007. The state won't talk money yet. The last contract we had and the one prior to that included zeros. Yes, zeros, meaning no raise at all. Even when we do get raises, they nowhere in hell keep up with inflation.

As far as vacations are concerned, employees are given 2 weeks until they're in the system I think 10 years, after which it's increased to 3 weeks. I'm in the system nearly 20 years and I get 3 weeks. That Florida vacation Fez Man mentioned I recently took? That was part of my 3 weeks. Now here's the kicker - we get 2 or 3 weeks, BUT the courts are "technically" closed the week between Christmas & New Years. Here in Nassau County at least, all nonessential personnel have to take off and have to charge themselves for the week. So there's a week of vacation time. Fortunately for me, I'm considered essential. If not I wouldn't have taken that week in the beginning of December. Court Officers get a uniform allowance, the rest of us don't.
Sick time - one week. To me that's no big deal since at any job I've ever worked, including retail, I've had sick time.

The public's perception of the lazy & rude civil servant doesn't really exist. The people I know, whether they're cops, attorneys, court officers, probation etc, work their asses off and earn every penny they make.

Once upon a time I thought about leaving - I was even offered a job in member services at my timeshare this past trip, but at this point, I'd be crazy to do so.

Like I said though - this is an argument that civil servants fight all the time. There is no way of winning it because of the public's perception. You will always see what you want to see while we're always going to see & know differently. For both sides, the grass is greener looking over the fence

So you get 2 weeks vacation (now 3) and one week of sick time? Gee, that sounds like the 15 Paid Time Off days I get (that covers vacation & sick). After 5 years I get 5 more days, but they MUST be taken the week between Christmas & New Years. I also get 7 or 8 paid holidays, plus one floater. How many holidays do government employees get? Seems to be a lot more.

In the private sector our raises are not guaranteed, either. The owner of my company can decide that he'd rather pocket that money instead of giving out raises & bonuses. Oh, and last year he postponed the raise & bonus by a month, thereby cheating us out of a month of extra money.

Also, as a government employee I assume you are in their pension plan. I have to contribute to my 401k in order to get the company match. My retirement depends on my contribution, not just showing up to work when I'm supposed to.

With this company I get no reimbursement for my CPE credits to keep my CPA. They don't pay for any CPA membership fees. There is no tuition reimbursement, either.

So, while you may think you've got it bad in the government, do me a favor and on every government holiday, while you get to sleep in, think of us who have to schlep into the office like it's just another day.

Love ya, Ma!

I'm actively looking for a position with the federal government. After being jerked around (elimination of pension, benefits, and greatly increased health care costs) by my company for many years I'm fed up. Besides, I could bridge in my ten years of naval service towards my retirement.

Pros and cons with both public and private service but from where I stand, the public sector looks worth it.

Okay, like I said - the grass always looks greener on the other side and this is an argument that we can go back & forth with forever & never agree upon.

The "government holidays" that we get, at least in my court system, are federal holidays. I have to work the day after Thanksgiving & didn't get out early yesterday and will be working until 5 PM on Christmas Eve, even though Christmas Eve is a bigger deal family-wise than Christmas Day (the Day is "in-law day" - my sisters see their in-laws). I will also be working until 5 PM on New Year's Eve while the majority of offices in the area will be closing between 12 & 3 or not opening at all.

Yes, I have a pension that I paid into for 10 years. Eventually there will be changes to the retirement system as well - more along the lines of a 401K. They're working on it in Albany, so God knows how long that's going to take. The judges haven't had a raise since 1999 & in the last 2 years Albany hasn't been able to agree on whether or not they "deserve" a raise

I never said I had it bad working a government job. Especially now, I love my job. I hate the work but that's because I've been doing it so long there is no challenge any more - I could basically do what I do with my eyes closed & it would all be correct. But I love the people that I'm working with and that makes the day go by quickly. That would be the case in private industry as well.

Let's just agree to disagree and move on. :action-sm

my dad was a letter carrier for 34years, for years i busted his balls about it, made twice as much money than him, but now that im older i really think that he had the right idea. i also work closely with our local government, the waiting list to get a job in the county garage is quite frankly 20years long, and ummmm im not a republican so i have a better chance of getting run over buy a police car than working in the county garage....

oh and im shocked, my thrashing was way less brutal than i was expecting.....;)

My head is spinning after reading these posts....

I started with my company on 4/1/07 and they started me with 17 days of paid-time off. I didn't use 62 hours of it, so they are paying me for it at the end of the year. On January 1st, I get 25 days for 2008. Am I getting hosed? :action-sm

Fez, you oughta change your voter registration if you think it'll get you in the door for a gig like that. There are worse things in life...

As far as public service jobs go, I think it depends where you are. For example, I have a cousin who is a PA State Trooper. Around here, there are local police departments so the state police really don't do a heck of alot...

Where he is at, there are no local departments. The state police are it. So, he's seen alot of action. He's been shot at and missed, shit at and hit, literally...

Some people in a particular job may have it easy and take advantage, where other people in the same positojn might be busting their asses day in and day out just to get by...

I would pay for my own uniform service and after all it is a complete write off, leave that messy sick people stuff outside the house
