'She inspired us all': How a cheerleader with Down's Syndrome became homecoming queen and touched a community

Driven: Barbara Behlmann, 19, is inspiring to her classmates at Hazelwood West High in St Louis

It can be a difficult time for many teens.

But high school for Barbara Behlmann has been exhilarating.

The 19-year-old has inspired her classmates at Hazelwood West High in St Louis - not because she was crowned homecoming queen or is a star cheerleader - but because she has Down's Syndrome.

One of her teachers, Jodi Schutzenhofer, explained to 'Unknowingly, Barbara has taught us all that nothing is impossible if you are willing to work for what you want.'

As the website reports, Barbara was four-years-old when child welfare workers placed her in the foster home of Gary and Karen Behlmann - malnourished at 22lbs.
Her birth parents had neglected and abandoned her; by then, she had already lived in 17 other homes and had extreme difficulties communicating.

Doctors described her as having 'failure to thrive.'

But the Behlmanns, STL Today reports, said slowly with nurturing and intense speech and language therapy, she began to flourish.

Today, she is considered one of the most outgoing students at Hazelwood - and one of the most popular.

Barbara's classmates at the school, which boasts a healthy student population of 2,200, have embraced the teen rather than shunning her for being different.

'I think because Barbara was able to communicate, and she wasn't afraid to do things, kids were more accepting,' her mother told the website.

'We never put limits on Barbara. We never said "You can't do this," or "You're not able to do this,"' she added.

Barbara picked up an interest in sports, and soon after joined the cheerleading squad, practicing stunts for hours ahead of the first game.

Well-remembered: Barbara, front row, second from right, was also crowned homecoming queen by her classmates

Her teammate, Danielle Randall, told STL Today she didn't show a hint of nerves.

'She caught on quick,' Danielle said. 'Barbara is, like, so spirited, and so eager to learn. (Before the game) she was making sure her bow was just right. But I don't think she was nervous.'

Ever the teenage girl, Barbara also gushes about her boyfriend on Facebook, whom she describes as 'loving'.

When she was announced homecoming queen, she clapped along with her classmates, not realising they had favoured her to take the crown.

Her outgoing nature, however, has affected more that just her peers at Hazelwood. A member of the Peer Buddies Club, she has helped to bridge the gap between special needs students and others without disabilities, John Cary, superintendent of the Special School District of St. Louis County, noted.

Making a difference: Barbara is credited with helping to bridge the gap between students with special needs and those without

Now a high school senior, Barbara will have fond memories to look back on, and kind words from her classmates to keep her going.

A classmate signing her yearbook made sure she knew how lasting an impression she has made.

'You're such an amazing person. And you inspire me to do better,' Sarah Marshall wrote. 'I'm so happy to have met you.'

Barbara plans to continue her education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis through the Special School District after graduation.

Constant sate of misery
Why must everyone be included? I played football with a kid with downs in middle school. He was super dangerous, he used to swing his helmet at peoples heads on the sidelines. Enough.
