Girl aced math final at Oregon State U. -- at age 10

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Collette Byrne aced her math final at Oregon State University.

That would be the end of the story.

Except for the fact that she’s 10 years old.

The youngest person to ever attend classes at OSU, Collette takes it all in stride. Not only that, she’s also a fast reader, finishing a 600-page book in a day.

She’s modest of her accomplishments, admitting she doesn’t always get perfect scores on her homework.

“I did really well on the final. I can’t say the same for the midterm,” she said. “You can’t expect a person of my age to get everything perfect.”

But Collette came out on top of her algebra class at OSU, where you have to be 14 to go to class by yourself. And having her dad by her side in class changes the equation for a kid.

“I think he talks too much. He answered too many questions,” she said. “He should have given the other student a chance.”

The other students took a while to get used to her being there, too.

“They weren’t exactly zombies. They were just sort of not talking … just taking notes and not saying much at all,” she said.

But she warmed them up by being a regular kid -- she even created a Power Point presentation on inverse functions and wrote the words to go along with Justin Timberlake’s song, “Mirrors.”

She said she worries that her sixth grade friends will treat her differently for excelling, but that’s a problem she’ll figure out, as well.

“My dad has high expectations of me, so I try to meet those expectations by working my hardest,” she said.

I don't know if that is impressive for a 10 year old or it really points out how bad our education system has fallen

Well I doubt the guy could help her during the test, but having him there to reinforce the lecture really makes this story less impressive. Also, what dolt is taking algebra in college?
