Google’s YouTube in Talks to Let Video Creators Charge Viewers

January 29, 2013 at 3:40 pm PT

Google Inc.’s YouTube video site has been in talks to allow video creators to charge viewers to access their content as early as this year, said people familiar with the discussions.

The move would add a new revenue stream for YouTube and its thousands of content partners, and it could potentially help the site lure new video creators who want a subscription model rather than rely only on advertising, these people said. YouTube executives have long discussed such a possibility publicly, so the discussions aren’t a surprise.

I'd print the whole article, but the Wall Street Journal cunts make you sign in.

I can't think of a single thing I've ever seen on YouTube that I'd pay to see.

Theoretically this could lead to serious content providers using Youtube as a VOD-type thing. Nothing Youtube-centric like short clips or whatever is going to be worth charging for because no one would pay.

Good way to drive traffic down on Youtube. Sure, alot of people would be dumb enough to pay for stupid shit...but I'm not falling for it. "Pay $9.99 for one year access to watch this guy's video series of his cat chasing a laser light! It's hilarious!" Under the current free model, you can share that video to Facebook and Twitter and drive a bunch of people to Youtube to watch...who will then each drive a bunch more to the site, and so on. Under a pay model...you might get a 1/5th of those people paying for it and checking it out. If that. On the other hand, if it's a cheaper fee to remove the stupid fuckin advertisements that pop up before watching a video...I could see that working out better.

I'll laugh at the first Youtube vid mr. sin posts in Cool Internet Videos that you need to pay to watch.

I'd be pissed if I paid for YT content and it as laggy as it is currently. Seriously, half the videos on YT are dogshit slow.

These were the first two things I thought of when I read the thread title. They will probably do it like TV providers do with channels like ESPN/HBO, they will give more bandwidth to the paid content and even less for the opieradio type videos.

Seems like a good idea but isnt there plenty of places to put paid content up at? Seems like the current model of watch an ad to get the content seems to be working fine now.

If YouTube wants me to pay to watch fetish videos, I might as well give me monies to porn sites.

"You have to pay $1 to watch Call Me Maybe."
"Maybe not, dopes."

I'm seriously trying to think of what on YouTube they can people to pay money to see. Music videos? Trailers? Stunt boys?

This is just speculation, but I think they are trying to encourage people to put money into original content. People at the fame level of O&A's higher profile comedians that want to make series but can't convince networks to play.

It'll be full shows and movies that you'll have to pay to see. No one is going to demand payment to see honey badger or a Boxxy video.
