Gray Wolves No Longer Endangered

BILLINGS, Mont. (Feb. 21) - Gray wolves in the Northern Rockies will be removed from the endangered species list, following a 13-year restoration effort that helped the animal's population soar, federal officials said Thursday.
An estimated 1,500 wolves now roam Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. That represents a dramatic turnaround for a predator that was largely exterminated in the U.S. outside of Alaska in the early 20th century.

"Gray wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains are thriving and no longer require the protection of the Endangered Species Act," said Interior Deputy Secretary Lynn Scarlett. "The wolf's recovery in the Northern Rocky Mountains is a conservation success story."

The restoration effort, however, has been unpopular with ranchers and many others in the three states since it began in the mid-1990s, and today some state leaders want the population thinned significantly.

The states are planning to allow hunters to target the animals as soon as this fall. That angers environmental groups, which plan to sue over the delisting and say it's too soon to remove federal protection.

"The enduring hostility to wolves still exists," said Earthjustice attorney Doug Honnold, who is preparing the lawsuit. "We're going to have hundreds of wolves killed under state management. It's a sad day for our wolves."

Plans submitted by Idaho, Montana and Wyoming indicate the states will likely maintain between 900 and 1,250 wolves for the foreseeable future, federal officials said.

Wolves have increasingly preyed on livestock as they expanded into new territories. At the same time, ranchers and wildlife agents have made more wolf kills, which are allowed under the Endangered Species Act in response to livestock conflicts.

I am no PETA freak..but I think it is a bad idea...the ranchers have sent herds up to the edge of the wolf habitat..easy food = predation... duh!

I'm with Hudson. I'm not a PETA idiot or much of an environmentalist, but this just strikes me as a colossally bad idea.

Especially the "Ok, hunters, you can start shooting them now!" part of the equation.

On that Life After People show on the Discovery Channel, they speculated that if human beings disappeared the wolves would go buzznuts. They're already there... living on the fringes of human territory, and humans are the only thing that keeps their populations in check. They can reproduce stupid fast... as the article above demonstrates. They'd be the top predators in North America in no time... our domesticated dogs wouldn't stand a chance against them. There's no other predator that would even come close to being able to compete against them.

Sorry, THP, but I'm with Wes Mantooth on this one. The wolves are fucked once their territory overlaps with the pythons. :)

Don't make me start a poll thread.

It'll be like the bagel/toast controversy all over again. Factions will be formed that will threaten to tear this board in half. Nobody wants that... so you'll just jump on the wolf bandwagon now if you know what's good for you.

Oh come now. A big, mean gray wolve would kick the ass of some faggot snake. Snakes don't hunt in packs, wolves do. Even supposing the python would get lucky enough to take down one wolf, it's packmates would be all up in that shit.

Gray Wolves are the biggest fruits to ever strut on the evolutionary stage. They were almost extinct until Man stepped in and gave them a do over. Sure, an Alpha wolf looks tough padding around in the forest until YOINK! a Python hanging from a tree branch gives him an aerial view of his pussy pack mates staring up at him helplessly while his head starts down the gullet highway.

It's not like they are going to just let hunters kill every wolf that they see. I am sure there will be very limited tags and a well-designed program to keep the population in check without overkilling.

Oh, and wolves would certainly kick the hell out of a bunch of pussy little pythons.

Gray Wolf loses federal endangered species protection

Gray wolf hunts planned after de-listing By JESSIE BONNER, Associated Press Writer
Sat Mar 29, 6:04 AM ET

BOISE, Idaho - Good news for gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains: They no longer need federal protection. The bad news for the animals? Plans are already in the works to hunt them.

Federal Endangered Species Act protection of the wolves was lifted Friday in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, giving those states management of the estimated 1,500 gray wolves in the region.

Even though environmentalists plan to sue the federal government next month to restore wolf protections, hunts are already being scheduled by state wildlife agencies to reduce the wolf population to between 900 and 1,250.

Idaho hunters will be allowed to kill between 100-300 of the animals this fall under a plan approved by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission. The hunts are partly in response to increasing numbers of livestock being killed as the predators' population has grown.

"We manage big game for a living, we're good at it," said Steve Nadeau, who oversees large carnivores for the Idaho Fish and Game Department. "The world is watching and we know it."

Fish and Game estimates Idaho now has 800 gray wolves. Should the number of breeding pairs in Idaho fall below a target number, the animals could be brought back under federal protection.

After a series of public shouting matches between wolf advocates and opponents, comments from Idaho Department Fish and Game officials on Friday seemed largely designed to reassure both ends of the debate.

Cal Groen, director of the department, told reporters that his agency has already proven its ability to recover and maintain Idaho wolf populations. "We've exceeded all the goals the federal government set," Groen said.

But Doug Honnold, a managing attorney for the nonprofit environmental law firm Earthjustice, disagrees. Honnold said the wolf populations won't be fully recovered in Idaho and the northern Rockies until the animals number between 2,000 and 3,000.

Earthjustice, which represents 12 local and national environmental groups, plans to sue the federal government next month to continue wolf protections.

All three state plans to manage the wolves call for a reduction in their numbers, which will eventually lead to weaker breeding, Honnold said in a telephone interview from Bozeman, Mont.

"We think that would be a disaster," he said. "We've spent a lot of time, money and effort to promote wolf recovery."

Gray wolves were listed as endangered in 1973 after being hunted into near extinction, but the population has rebounded dramatically after restoration efforts began in 1995. The wolves were recently de-listed in the western Great Lakes, while the wolf population in the Southwest remains endangered.

Wildlife biologists estimate there are now 41 breeding pairs in Idaho, in 72 packs. If that number falls below 10 breeding pairs, or 15 during a three-year period, the wolves could be brought back under federal protection.

On Friday, Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter signed a bill to allow ranchers, outfitters and pet owners to kill wolves harassing livestock. The law gives owners up to 72 hours to report wolves they've killed after catching them annoying, disturbing or stalking animals or livestock.

Why repopulate the wolves to a decent number when they're only going to have hunts to kill them off?

That doesn't make sense to me.

I'd rather have people hunts to kill off the moron overpopulation.

Wonder when grizzlies & kodiacks are gonna finally decide to take over (I realize that in terms of the earth, humans are barely a drop in the bucket, but sometimes I'm still a tad surprised we've lasted this long)
