Haven't had a phone since around '01. Going to need one for a new job I'll be into relatively soon. Some criteria I'm after:

    - Not a fan of Keys. Touchscreens I like.

    - I loathe iTunes. I like the ability to lob an mp3/mp4 on and have it play. I.E. Much the same way a PSP has a music folder. Take an mp3/mp4 from anywhere, dump it in the music folder, off you go.

    - Don't care about mini-games/apps/etc. Just use it for the odd text. Random call. And music.

    - Decent camera would be a plus.

That's about it. Again, I know fuck all about current phones. I could make you a pretty sick gaming PC from scratch, if you dumped me into a PC store, but for phones (or cars for that matter) I know fuck all nothing.

Any advice? Anything I should steer clear from? Halp.

Gonna depend on your carrier. Makers have exclusive models
they make for different carriers. I have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus
for Verizon and love it. I think it was replaced by the S III.
I'm rather partial to Andriod phones at this point.

My wife has an Iphone and after seeing hers compared to mine.
No fucking way will I get one of those. No I tunes shit. I just drag
and drop music onto mine and even got a free downloader app
that gets me tons of music for nada off the net and legally.

There's Galaxy up here. Will give those a look.

Unable to convey how much I dislike anything Apple.

Yeah, you're definitely looking for an Android phone. I haven't really researched phones for about nine months when I bought my Nexus, but I think the top ones for Verizon are the Nexus, Razr Maxxx, Rezound, and Galaxy S III. The SIII is probably the best out right now.

Also I recommend going high-end, even if you don't think you'll need it... because sometime in the next two years you probably will.

I have wondered how you back up the android phones?

itunes may suck but they keep every thing backed up good incase you lose or destroy the phone

Titanium Backup will back your apps up. The sync feature built into Android backs up your contacts. You can get apps to back up your text messages and call logs.

I sync all the files to a couple of folders on my laptop.

If I add anything to it I can save it all in a matter of seconds.

I just drag and drop everything on my computer every so often. You can get apps that automate the process over wifi. Google backs up your contact, Google+, dropbox, and other services can automatically back up your pictures, etc.

I don't lose my shit. I don't wreck my shit either. iTunes is horrid. Give me drag and drop any day.

Android's the way to go for that stuff. I tossed my MP3 player because
the Nexus has a 32 gig hard drive so I can put a bunch of music on
it and not have to carry 2 things.

You haven't had a cell phone for the last ten years? Didn't they give you your cell phone back when they let you out of the joint, Gekko?

Seriously... how have you survived the last decade without a cell phone, Fred Flintstone?

I get that a lot. Never once sent a text either. My life as a whole is pretty normal. Home to work. Work to home. Don't need to talk to anyone while I'm at work. I have my PC at home for emails. If I'm in school for something (EMT lately), why would I want to take a call/text mid class? I'm learning shit. I'm busy. Don't want to be disturbed.

Besides, beyond my chick, I don't really talk to anyone other than coworkers. I have a single person I'd call a 'friend', and my sister. Other than that...*Shrugs*. I'm a hermit.

I have a buddy who doesn't have his own cell phone, and it's fucking annoying because if he's with me he's always asking to borrow mine or I'll get calls from his wife for him. Of course he doesn't understand how to make a call on a touchscreen either, so I have to constantly show him or do it for him. He was driving with me once and asked to use my phone for the fourth time in 30 minutes... I actually pulled over and made him go use a pay phone.

You don't need a cell phone, what you need is a shotgun equipped with a toe trigger.

Well we can't all be skinny dipping with 30-40 somethings on a regular basis, dodging picture-ruiners, and the general social nexus of the neighborhood.

I keep recommending the Galaxy SIII to everyone. If you have had the same phone since 01, may as well get the most advanced phone out now, so it'll last you a good long time. The GS3 has 16 gb of space and room for a 32gb SD card, plus it has 2gb RAM. If you aren't big into apps and all that, then that storage should last you a really long time and with that much ram, it's pretty future proof.

Yeah, that's something else I'm paranoid about. Fucking contracts. Back in 'The Day' a contract was an old school Ball and Chain from the '20's. Dunno if I can stick with the same phone for 3 years. Plus I need to be able to call the US without a problem (i.e. extra fees or limited call time and bullshit). I'll see what I can find out there. Oh and THP has to approve, or it just won't do.

You can get it in a 32gig model as well. And you can also put up to a 64gig sd card in it.

Don't really need 64 gigs of storage. Not going on the net with it. Not putting movies on it (though it'd be nice I guess). Just calls, texts, and music. 16gig is fine.

Well if you get into watching movies on it the HD screen is gorgeous. So just remember that sd cards are dirt cheap now. HD movies will fill up your phone quick. Hell I downloaded one episode of Dirty Jobs and it was 1.6 gigs.
