Help removing a fucking pulley....

#1
WTF? I know it's something stupid, but why can't I remove this pulley?

I removed the four bolts, tapped the shit out of it..... What am I missing? I just want to wire brush it and repaint it, the rust/corrosion is eating away at the serpentine belt.

Just looks rusted on to me. Beat on it, alternating sides. Some wd40 wouldn't hurt.

Yup. Soak it with rust penetrant and tap it with a small hammer.

That's what I thought, but like I said I tapped the hell out of it. Now that I know there's no trick or secret technique required I will give it another shot in the morning.

Soak it down and let it sit overnight. Should do the trick.

Soak it in penetrating fluid and apply heat with a propane torch, on and off. Then you just rotate and tap it.

Is that a marine motor btw?

Yes.

Edit: the seal went in the seawater pump (right below the pulley in question). Sea water leaked out of the pump onto the belt and was then flung all over the damn place. The pulleys all rusted, eating up the belt, hence the reason I'm removing them all and refurbishing.

I'd be careful with a torch. Too hot and you'll damage
the impeller seal. Then it's new pump time.

good luck bro.

pb blaster is your friend. you could also use a steering wheel puller to remove it.

Might wanna check how much a new pulley costs while you're at it

That one is actually the best of them. Well, except the tensioner pulley, it's plastic.

that thing will just bend the shit out of it. you need a puller that will pull it from the inside, best bet is to try and sand some of the rust from around the center of the pulley spray it with some pb and maybe hit it with a little heat and use a steering wheel puller.

Finally got back to it today. The PB soaked for two weeks, and the pulley pretty much fell off when it saw the mallet. Appreciate all the help, guys.

Any reason why I shouldn't slather some anti-seize compound on the contact surfaces when I reassemble?

Won't hurt, just don't go too nuts because the excess will
fly everywhere when you fire the motor up.
