i recently had a external hard drive...that crashed...and replaced it. Now my ipod needs to be "restored" to add additional files. How can i extract the mp3 music on the ipod to my new portable hard drive before restoring the ipod?

any help would be helpful.

Ephpod works, I think that's how it's spelled.

Otherwise I heard that you can crack open your motherboard and find a magic decoder ring.

browse into the IPOD Directory...set in Windows to show all hidden folders...open the MUSIC folder in the directory and click and drag ALL of the tunes to your machine (since the titles are encrypted)...pull them back into iTunes and keep the ones you want...delete the rest

He's right.

Here a little more detailed info.

- Attach your iPod
- Open ‘My Computer’
- Open the IPOD folder
- Make sure you can view all ‘Hidden Folders’ - if you’re not sure how to do this here’s how:
[*While in the IPOD folder click on ‘Tools’ located at the top…go to ‘Folder Options’….go to the ‘View’ tab….scroll down and click open the ‘Hidden Files and Folders’ file (if it’s not open already)…make sure you green spot the box that reads ‘Show Hidden Files and Folders’…then click OK]

- Once you’re in the IPOD folder double click on the watermark type folder that reads ‘iPod_Control’
- Either click and drag the ‘Music’ folder in there to the new Hard Drive or copy paste (I would suggest click and drag).
- Open iTunes
- Once the ‘Music’ folder is finished transferring all the files, click and drag it to your iTunes.
- iTunes will recognize the description of all the information that was already on the files. (i.e. Name, Artist, Album, etc.)

I use copypod to backup my data to my PC.

It's actually easy to keep copies of any non-DRM music as long as you have your ipod set to manual instead of auto update.

It's a pain in the ass if you are trying to backup anything purchased through Itunes though.... just one more reason to steal or rip your own music to your ipod.
