I recommend a Lenovo (they made IBM's laptops for years and years and now go under their own name) R series laptop

HP makes some really nice machines lately. I've spent several years doing warranty work on several brands and IBM (lenovo) is my favorite but I'm really digging HP's newest stuff.

Just make sure you have a big enough hard drive for all that porn.
And a DVD burner. For backing up the porn.

Toshiba makes good laptops :) I'm using the second one that I've had right now. You can even just pick them up at Wal-Mart for under your $1,000 limit. They have models with biometric fingerprint readers so you don't need to remember your password. Just move your finger over the little glass roller and your computer will unlock.

or go to like a shop in town where its just a couple of guys running it and ask them to build you one. it'd be just as cheap and better, usually. but if you want warrantees and stuff which ya probably do, i'd still build my own.

As much as they get hammered by some people, I'd say the best value may actually be Dell. And they always have offers running.

Just make sure it has plenty of RAM and a good sized hard drive. 1 Gig of RAM minimum and 80 GB hard drive.

For what you'll be doing the rest of the stuff like graphics and sound really won't matter much. You should be able to get a good Dell moderately loaded up for a few hundred less then the 1000 limit you have. Especially this time of year.

Accidental Damage Warranty 1 year ASUS Accidental Damage Warranty - Drops, Fire, Spill, Surge for purchase after 9/10/07
Parts 2 years limited
Labor 2 years limited

This is a KILLER warranty. Most laptops come with 1-year, with NO accidental damage protection.

Asus is a top-notch hardware component manufacturer. For many years they have been well-respected for making component level hardware (motherboards, video cards, etc). Now they make laptops and their offerings are very impressive.

Here's the extra 1GB of RAM to upgrade it to 2GB. It's a piece of cake to install, since Asus doesn't fuck you buy using cheap 512MB RAM chips and filling both slots. You just pop it in.

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - Retail
Ok, so here's the lowdown.

Laptop - $949.00
RAM - $24.99
Shipping - $20.18 (based on my zip code - yours might be slightly different)
Total: $995.16

There's a $10 mail-in rebate on the RAM so your final cost will be $985.16.

I'd buy this machine myself in a heartbeat. Besides the killer warranty, solid specs, and not cutting corners (by using dedicated video and not fucking you by filling the RAM slots), they give you a laptop bag and a regular mouse to use with it.

Good choice. I've been an HP guy for about 5 years and I'm about to buy a new one myself. I've had an HP Pavilion dv4000 for about two years and it is a great laptop. I've never had any problems. I priced an HP dv6500z with an AMD Turion 1.9 ghz, 15.4 widescreen hi def display, fingerprint reader, built-in webcam, microphone, wireless lan with bluetooth, 120gb 5400RPM hard drive, and a 12-cell battery. I priced it at about $925 but then I added Office 2007 which bumped it up to about $1,050. Not too bad at all.

Anyone know the comparison between AMD and Intel? I haven't had any complaints about Intel which is on my laptop, and I think my HP desktop has AMD...but I'm just not sure of the comparison performance-wise. I can switch to the dv6500t which has Intel and is somewhat comparable to the 6500z model.

$400 off HP dv6500z
$400 off HP dv6500t

You can also customize it anyway you want...the coupon code still works.

I ordered the dv6500z and added 2 yrs of Norton Internet Security, Office 07, 2.1 ghz AMD, 2gb mem, 120gb hard drive, and even threw in a wireless photosmart printer all for about $970 including tax with free shipping. Totals savings of about 39%. Sweet!
