I have an 80GB iPod Classic (5th Gen I believe) that is stuck in recovery mode. The play button stopped working, so I restored it to see if it was a hardware problem or a software problem. After I did that it keeps saying that it's in recovery mode and I need to restore it. I've restored it about 50 times and even changed the drive letter as it says on Apple's website. Does anybody know how to get it out of recovery mode so I don't have to take it a "Genius" or buy my 3rd iPod in as many years?

A hammer should work. What does the message say to you when you plug in the ipod? Your cable might be shot, or it could be as simple as repairing the itunes install. I had a loop like that and repaired the Itunes installation and swapped out ipod cables and that seemed to fix the problem, try that.

I've tried re-installing iTunes as well as a new cable. Even when it's not plugged in, if I turn it on a screen comes up saying it needs to be restored.

    Your hard drive is crashed.

The recovery loop is from the ram.

Hold it up to your ear when booting it... if you hear "clicks" a lot... that is the hard drive reader arm trying to find the boot sectors.

Yep physical hard drive failure. Get a Touch to replace it.

I've fixed a first Generation IPOD for a family member, changed a broken screen and worn out battery. Lots of fun prying the damn thing apart. Never had a desire to own one after that.

Ive changed at least 4 cracked iphone screens for my sister and her husband.

I replaced the battery in my brothers ipod classic and my old ipod.

I have also replaced my hard drive.

It isn't really hard and there are tons of guides, but I pretty much just use google music and my tbolt now....

I'm thinking of just swapping the drive with my old one where the headphone jack stopped working. I would get a touch, but I don't see the point of paying more money for less space and they max out at 32GB the last time I looked around.

What do you mean Cloud? Put all of my shit on the Cloud? That would be great except for when I don't have a connection to access the stuff on there.
