I dated a college girl way back when. There were a string of r@pe$ on her college campus, and, as a result, a bunch of broads at the college, my girlfriend included, all took a karate/self-defense class that some bulldyke lesbitarian was offering on the campus.

It ABSOLUTELY did more harm than good. The bulldyke taught them a few stupid ass karate kicks and chops over a couple of weeks, and all the silly broads walked away from the class 'empowered' and 'confident'... thinking that they could actually protect themselves.

My girlfriend took to walking across the campus at night by herself... she never would've done that before the karate classes, but after she was 'empowered' she felt she could, "...take care of herself."

I read the training guide the bulldyke had given her class... not a single bit of common sense anywhere in the whole guide. Nothing about walking at night in groups... getting a man to walk with you... nothing like that. It was all about kicking dudes in the nuts and gouging their eyes out with car keys... all sorts of man hating bulldyke shit that was utterly worthless in the real world.

I tried to talk sense into my girlfriend... I told her that all that self defense for women crap only worked in movies starring Melissa Gilbert on the Lifetime Channel, and she was much better off using common sense rather than self defense.

Wasted my breath. Nothing ever happened to her, but one of the broads who HAD taken the bulldyke's classes was rap$d the next semester... while walking alone across campus at night. :icon_roll

Self defense on the street, means packing a heater and knowing how to use it under high stress.

yeah, right, a 6 foot 2 guy attacking a 5 foot 3 woman, even a fat one like me, is not going to be stopped by a kick to the balls or an attempt to get him in the eyes with your keys. If anything that's going to get him more pissed off and more aggressive. Even if he's 5'8", he's still got upper body strength that most women wouldn't be able to overcome.

Get mace, a whistle, walk in groups and learn to always keep the eyes in the back of your head open and alert. Even if you have to walk by yourself, stay in well lit areas preferably near other people.

This goes without saying. I would argue that an eye strike will yield greater results than mace though.....especially if under stress you mace yourself instead of the nig...I mean bad guy that's trying to attack you.

The best way to stay out of trouble is to avoid it..."Do I need to go to 7-11 at 2am to get smokes...or can it wait?" Sometimes trouble will find you though and you should be prepared....get a gun and some training if you're allowed in your state.

For less lethal situations I would recommend a "Krav Maga" class. Krav Maga uses the bodies natural reaction in it's moves.

Basic principles

In Krav Maga, there are no hard-and-fast rules, and no distinction in training for men and women. It is not a sport, and there are no specific uniforms, attire or competitions. All the techniques focus on maximum efficiency in real-life conditions. Krav Maga generally assumes a no quarter situation; the attacks and defenses are intended for potentially lethal threat situations, and aim to neutralize these and escape via maximum pain or damage to opponents, as rapidly and safely as possible. Crippling attacks to vulnerable body parts, including groin and eye strikes, headbutts, and other efficient and potentially brutal attacks, improvized use of any objects available, and maximizing personal safety in a fight, are emphasized.
The guiding principles for those performing Krav Maga techniques are:
 • Neutralize the threat
 • Avoid injury
 • Go from defending to attacking as quickly as possible
 • Use the body's natural reflexes
 • Strike at any vulnerable point
 • Use any tool or object nearby
According to a description written for the self-publication media site Associated Content, the basic premises of Krav Maga are: [1]
 • You're not going to care how much damage you're going to cause.
 • Cause as much damage as possible and run.
 • Do not try and prolong a fight. Do what needs to be done and escape.
The basic idea is to first deal with the immediate threat (being choked, for example), prevent the attacker from re-attacking, and then neutralize the attacker, proceeding through all steps in a methodical manner, despite the rush of adrenaline that occurs in such an attack. The emphasis is put on taking the initiative from the attacker as soon as possible.

Krav Maga sounds like a good thing to learn. I wonder though, is it a lot more practical than other martial arts as far as a street fight/real self defense is concerned?

I've seen one particular self defense method that works like a charm in the real world situation...

The hog wild raving lunatic style.

I was out in Syracuse once and I saw these two big galoots go after this one little dude. I didn't see what started the whole mess, but it was clear the two big dudes meant to put the serious smackdown on the little dude...

so one of the lummoxes nails the little dude square in the chest with a crushing punch... the little dude goes down but he pops right back up like he had springs on his ass. The two big guys start closing in and the little dude goes *SNAP* and just loses his shit... he starts screaming like a mental patient and he's flailing around like his hair is on fire. He drives straight at one of the guys, who's standing there in some idiotic boxing stance and is absolutely unprepared when the little dude lunges straight at his face with both hands and rakes his face with his fingernails... the results of which was horrible, immediately debilitating, and very, very bloody.

Then the little guy dives low like Pete Rose right at the other guy's legs, wraps around him like a boa constrictor, and then proceeds to clamp his teeth down on the guy's kneecap. The big guy howls in pain and reaches down to pry the crazy little bastard off, and CRUNCH... the little dude bites his finger... fucking hard. Blood comes a' gushin'... At about this time, some people in the crowd rush in and pull everybody apart, but the damage has been done.

It may not have been an honorable fighting style- the rabid squirrel style, but goddamn was it effective. The little dude walked away from a fight he had zero chance of even surviving... walked away without a scratch on him!

You have to respect that.

Very much so. I've been wanting to take classes since a studio opened up here a few years ago, and it's run by my old TKD instructor.

If you've seen any of the Bourne Identity movies...that's a close approximation. Basically how to use anything and everything against someone, and how to quickly turn defense into offense, and take the other person down as quickly and effectively as possible.

Of course, I think that was pretty much stated in an above post.

Then again...there's always Hamster Style.

What the hell do you do that you could write it off as a work expense? That would be sweet.

I've been looking at places to start taking BJJ classes, but now I'm going to have to look into Krav Maga a little more.

There's a place in Livonia. It's one of the only in the area, and the instructor is a great teacher.

I....work in some 'rough' areas.

krav maga is basically MMA for specific scenarios. krav maga as a name for a fighting style is kinda bullshit, it just means fight, so its like saying 'fight is the best fighting system.' in israel theres a bunch of more specific names for all the variations of mma for self defense, law enforcement/military, and bodyguards

this guy itay gil has one of the top bodyguard schools in israel, trains bodyguards and swat teams from all over the world. he competed in jj and muay thai since he was a child

Kapap, a different form of it. you can see alot of mma in this

KM would be a good way to go. Pure self defense, no bullshit. It is quite a workout though, so be prepared to work HARD. Other than that, a good Wing Chun or JKD school would probably work.
