Anyone else excited for this? It starts tonight on PBS and will run for 7 weeks. Ken Burns always does a great job with whatever topic he decides to cover. Should be great stuff.

I am really excited for it as well. Are you sure it runs for 7 weeks? I think I saw that there are several different episodes on this week. I could be wrong though.

Adam Buckman gave it a tremendous write up in the post on Thursday.

Yeah, it certainly peaked my interest. I've been clearing my DVR of space for this extremely ambitious (on theirs *and* my part - 14 hours) undertaking.

Plus the fact that I'll have to watch it by myself as my wife will surely come at me with her usual - "what's this crap? I hate war stuff . . . ."

Eff her. I'm watching it.

Yeah, really looking forward to this one, and will probably buy the DVD set when it comes out. Don't know if any of you guys remember this but many years ago there was a documentary series made called "The World At War" narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier. It was an English series (Thames Television) but PBS aired it here. It's a very powerful and comprehensive look at the second world war, I thought that if anyone here wanted to dig into modern war history a bit more I'd throw that in the ring.

Thankfully Ken Burns was shamed into altering his finished documentary, which was quite obviously racist because he didn't describe "the Latino experience". I'm sure the new product will be more palatable for all viewers now that the role of Latinos has been added, making it (finally!) a product we can allow our children to see.

"The Latino Experience"??? Why did we go back to Japan to do some landscaping afterwards?

There's the line.

I wish they were doing this over 7 weeks instead of 2. I don't have 14 hours to spare and I doubt my DVR has 12 hours of free HD space on top of what i normally tape.

Wow, Im surprised that theyre showing so many new episodes this week and next. If its seven parts as people are saying than it'll be over in two weeks.
Better adjust my DVR accordingly. Thanks for the heads up.

Wow...that last part about the latinos didn't feel added on at all.

The episode was clearly over when they played White Christmas. Then they all of a sudden added 25 minutes about new people who just happen to be of Latino descent and aren't from any of the 4 cities the film is focusing on.

I fucking hate SIG's.

Yes. Also was new to me how the soldiers suffered with very little supplies, like drinking water and the death count per day is surreal. 250 a day in the Phillipines. Did you hear the guy who was helping mass bury the dead throw in an extra Dog Tag set for himself incase he was killed and never found so his Family would have closure?

Amazing.

Yes.

Operation Shoestring turning into Operation Pestilence in Guadalcanal due to the lack of US military ships was surprising as well due to demilitarization after WWI. How being so unprepared as to have the same size army as Romania and using outmoded technologies led to sever amounts of fatalities.

Caught the first one.
Everything I'd expect from Ken Burns.
Outstanding restoration of video and photograph footage. Outstanding editing and great sound.

OK this needs to stop. Absolutely unacceptable.

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20058153,00.html

The 15-hour PBS documentary hasn't even aired, and I've already learned something new: Apparently, the Allies defeated the Nazis in Europe and won the war in the Pacific without using a single naughty word. At least, that's the message that public television viewers in some parts of the country will be getting, since PBS has decided to offer its local stations both an unexpurgated version of the film and a sanitized one that deletes exactly four curses, thus making television, history, and global conflict all safe for a 6-year-old.

Agreed. I've had to make some "tough decision" cuts on what I have stored on my DVR. Its a massive undertaking, but its worth it for quality programming, rather than the typcial network crap that numbs minds on a daily basis.
