So I got a Kindle Fire HD for my kid for christmas and i was tooling around with it pre-loading stuff for christmas morning and I noticed some odd peculiarities...

Most notably...If you add your own ripped videos (tv shows/movies from your current collection) they do not appear in the "Videos" section, but rather in the "Personal Videos" section. The thing that sucks is there is no cover art, no customizable cover art and no file names. The only way to tell what a video is is to hold on it until the video info option pops up and then you can see it's raw title. This is a massive inconvenience when you have 2 season of a show on it...

I am looking for a way to organize these videos....sub folders etc..anyone have any luck? Thoughts? So far as I can tell there is not a Fire HD compatible app yet.

Books also work the same way. If you manually add them or email them they will appear in the carousel, but only amazon purchased books appear in the library...

I'm not sure, but that might change if you root it, so that you can use other Video apps that aren't to Amazon.

I got my kid a Kindle Fire HD also, so I've been scouring thru threads on XDA in order to find out how to root it without bricking it. I really just want to put Play Store on it, so he can use my apps from my account.

Also pissed about the advertisements on the lockscreen. I need to pay $15 for them to turn it off. Yick.

I can confirm though...since they don't include a charger...that most other USB wall plugs work with the Kindle Fire HD. Including the iPhone 4 white charger plug.

Yeah, I have no prob with the charging...another great add on is the Newtrent line of usb battery packs...I get 30hrs out of the one I have so we can charge iPhones, Kindle Fires etc....

I ended up forking over the extra $15 after realizing it was literally just for ads. It's not what I want for the next 3 years....

Kid proof cases were tough to find. We are waiting on one of the jelly cases to be available for the fire HD...I don't want to mess around with the software...It's just a pain in the ass to have no itunes style tagging and organizing of my own videos.

I have the Otter box for mine. It does add some heft to it, but it includes a screen protector.

It ended up being extremely easy to root. I also learned over on XDA, that if you rename ONE file...it stops the stupid lockscreen adverts. Saved myself 15 bucks. I've got Nova Launcher running on it now...works better than my TouchPad running CM9.

You don't need to root to use files from the Google play store. I just copied the apk files from my phone and then copied them to my Kindle and they work fine.

mom bought me one for christmas, im still up in the air on what im going to do with it, i plan on keeping it (since i opened it in front of her to make her happy) i wanted an i pad but im assuming this thing will work for my basic needs, my biggest bitch is that its really nothing more than a giant add for amazon. i would rather completely wipe the unit and root it to another operating system.

XDA has a forum for the KFHD. Alot of tips on how to root, get rid of the stupid lockscreen ads/offers, and get the Play Store on it. They're working on getting CM10 (Jelly Bean) on it...and it works, but I hear it's still buggy. So I just decided to install a different launcher (Nova) and it got rid of the Amazon-style interface.

If you wanted to return it, you could grab a Google Nexus 7 for $60 more. Otherwise, the only option pretty much is to learn how to root it.

I don't know why people have panties in their twist about the lock screen ads. Who the fuck just sits there looking at the lock screen? The first thing you do when you turn it on is just swipe it away. Plus occasionally you get a good coupon. This week they have one for a $2 credit at the App store.

It's for my kid and it's tied to my e-mail address...so typically he'll see the Ford advertisement and click on the car for more information. And next thing you know Ford and the other advertisers are spamming my email because he apparently signed me up for all sorts of shit.

The shitty thing about Kindles is unrooted they don't support the entire Android Market... you can only download apps Amazon has made available.

If you're a-scared of rooting, you could always try side-loading the APK file on your Kindle.
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/11/kindle-fire-sideload/
Here's the APK file for your Nikon software for your Kindle:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1x8fhwcfsn70b5u/com.nikon.wu.wmau-65dfab68e19e99695c1f9bcf36e93a91.apk.gz
You'll need to download ES File Explore from Amazon to open it.

I will investigate this option since I just broke a windshield in a customer car blowing most of my I pad money, the kindle was free, I like the side load idea because I have decided I like the amazon books

You don't need to root your Kindle to get apps from other places on it. I go to 1mobile.com. They have an app you can download from their website onto your Kindle. The 1st one you should download is Dropbox or something similar. They have most apps you might want but if there's one that they don't have I download it to my phone and then use Airdroid to copy it to my computer. Then drop it into Dropbox and off to your Kindle it goes!
