License Plate Sells for $14 Million

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (Feb. 16) - A license plate with nothing but the number "1" on it went for a record $14 million at a charity auction Saturday.

Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, wouldn't say how many automobiles he owned or which of them might carry the record-breaking single-digit plate.

"I bought it because it's the best number," said Khouri, whose family made its fortune in real estate. "I bought it because I want to be the best in the world."

The oil-rich UAE began auctioning off vanity license plates last May.

Ordinary automobile license plates issued to drivers here - and even most other vanity series plates - carry both Arabic and Western numerals and script, defining the issuing city and country.

Khouri's plate, however, has only the Western numeral and no letters.

The record sale surpassed the $6.8 million that was paid for an Emirati license plate at an earlier auction with the Western number 5 on it - also without Arabic numerals or letters.

Proceeds from the auctions, which are held in a lavish hotel here, go to a rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents.

It's your tax dollars hard at work, folks. The military panders to the economy of UAE like you wouldn't believe.

This isn't unique to camel jockey land

Low numbered tag numbers are prestigious in Delaware for some residents. The lower the number the better according to those who find this to be the case. The state of Delaware began issuing license plates to vehicles in 1905. Initially owners were required to make their own plates, and not until 1909 did the state issue its own first official license plates. Car owners up until that time generally assigned between one and three numbers to their license plate. However in 1909, the state began assigning numbers starting with 1,000 because of the sporadic issuing of numbers under 1,000 and of poor record keeping of them.2

In 1935, tag numbers 1, 2, and 3 were reserved for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and the Secretary of State respectively by the Delaware General Assembly. Delaware license plate #4 and up remained in the general circulation.2 Nowadays car owners and family members alike cover lower number tags in the state of Delaware. Tags are transferrable from vehicle to vehicle and can also be sold from Delawarean to Delawarean. The Division of Motor Vehicles only levies a $20 fee for the transfer of a tag number from one owner to another. This allows for a family to keep a license plate number in their family from generation to generation. Ones that are not maintained run the risk of ceding back to the State and put back in general circulation.

The rage of low license plate numbers fetches some outrageous tag number sales in the state of Delaware. In 1994 the sale of Delaware tag #9 garnered $182,500 and in 2005 Delaware tag #170 sold for $115,000.2 Some four-digit plates can bring over $10,000 to the prospective seller. Other states where low numbered tags draw such attention include Washington, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Illinois, and the District of Columbia.

But Why? just Why?..I can see the history thing..but 14 mil for a new plate?
I wouldn't even spend the $35 that PA charges for personalized tags, so I agree 100%.

Some people have more money than sense.

I won't even pay $12 a year for a vanity plate.

Edit: Don beat me to it, guess I took too long researching the cost of personalized tags in FL.:icon_neut

must be nice to have disposable income

edit: and this is what I'd pay in NY if I had that income:

Personalized Empire plates are $43 for passenger and commercial vehicles, with an annual fee of $25. Motorcycle plates are $25.50 initially, with an annual fee of $15. This fee is in addition to your vehicle registration fee.
My registration fee is only $18, but still - why should I give the state more money?

Best number, or loneliest?
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one

No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
`Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, worse than two

It's just no good anymore since she went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

One is the loneliest, number one is the loneliest
Number one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest, one is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
It's just no good anymore since she went away
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

But Three is a Magic Number
Three is the best number. There's something I find comforting about three. I also like 5s and 0s (more along the lines of 10s). But There just seems to be something very orderly about a '3.'

But 42 is the awesomest number.
