Because she has a great union protecting her. It's not the schools fault, there hands are tied. The union made sure of that a long time ago. The board CANNOT break the contract. So keep paying your dues you dumb cunt.

A Massachusetts school board has denied a teacher's request for three paid days off to welcome home her soldier stepson who was seriously injured while serving in Afghanistan.
Sonya Lomax, a high school math teacher in Carver, Mass., had asked for the three additional days to visit with her stepson, 23-year-old Army Spc. Todd Lomax, who was seriously wounded after being hit by shrapnel in a grenade explosion in Kandahar Province in October.
Lomax had already taken the nine paid days of leave allotted to her under her contract, but requested an additional three days of leave, citing "extenuating circumstances," Fox affiliate WFXT-TV reported.

Lomax had used the nine days in her contract to visit Todd at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, where he was being treated for fractures, lacerations and head trauma. The high school teacher then asked for more time so that she can visit him when he returns to Fort Drum in New York, where his unit, the 10th Mountain Division, is based.
But Liz Sorrell, the superintendent of Carver High School, denied Lomax's request for the extra days, saying she was forced to honor the contract agreed upon by the school system and the teacher's union. Lomax then appealed to the school's committee board to overturn the decision.
The board, however, voted unanimously Monday night to uphold Sorrell's decision denying Lomax the days. Lomax had reportedly shared the story of her son's traumatic accident before the committee on Monday.
Many Carter residents, like Paul Johnson, said the board should have made an exception in Lomax's case.
"We can find a way to fund almost anything else," Johnson told WATD-FM. "We can fund thousands of dollars in other things, but we can’t fund something for a young man who gave a portion of his body for us? We need to make an exception. This isn’t about bureaucracy; this is about doing the right thing tonight.”
Sorrell had previously granted additional days to a faculty member whose home burned down, according to WFXT.

I would bet a years salary that if there was no union then then the superintendent of the school would have just said "Absolutely! go see your son, we'll cover your classes."

Didn't she feel a bout of the sniffles coming on? Don't want to spread that virus around the classroom.

I get what you're saying but the well being of if the actual students is of no concern to the union.

I'll get around to crying a river for the poor teachers who aren't getting enough vacation days right after I'm done lamenting the plight of those poor Occupiers who are all evicted and cold and shivery.

I agree with this. What happened to her son sucks, but teachers already have great benefits. I'm sure most teachers can think of some reason to justify additional leave if given the opportunity. A lot of people in the private sector only receive 10 days of paid vacation (if they're lucky) and she gets 9 days for working 181 days a year.

Obviously that's the fucking problem. If you think you can "find a way to fund almost anything else" while most school systems across the country are massive money pits, then you're fucking delusional.

Yea, FUCK every last job that still gives benefits!

Nobody should have good healthcare. Nobody should have vacation time. Nobody should have time off. Nobody should have a pension. There shouldn't be a minimum wage. Nobody should have a secure job.

You should just have to work until the day you die and then any medical bills you have should be indebted onto your children! FREEDOM!

Fuck her. I get ten paid vacation days a year and I actually work the entire year. She gets nine to work half a year. Do what everyone in the world does when they run out of vacation A) go to work or B) eat the loss in pay and take an unpaid personal/sick day. If they let this go through, then everyone in the school will be trying to prove that their need for extra days is more important.

You're a fucking moron. Maybe if the schools could educate our children for less than $10k/year (and do a better job at it) people would be more willing to accept exceptions like this. The problem is teachers have obnoxiously good compensation and benefits, and their results don't justify them.

I love how you use the phrase "work until the day you die" in a thread about teachers, who work 181 days a year and retire at 50. Good call.

Also I love how you use the term "freedom" to mock us because we have a problem with being forced at gunpoint to pay taxes into these school systems that just squander our money like they're fucking entitled to it. Another good call.

This isn't about a teacher wanting time off. This is about a teacher who wants MOAR! paid time off.
I though it was about a mother trying to see her injured son and her union fucking her over. Hahahahahahahahahah! Bitch.

The union didn't fuck her over. She used up her allotted amount of vacation days. No one is handcuffing her to her classroom so she can't go see her stepson, they just aren't going to pay her to go do it. WHOA, FUCKED RIGHT IN THE ASS!!!!

So you suggest that she just not show up for work? Actually the school can't do anything about it so I guess that's an option.

No - you may want to read more than the headline.

She already got 9 paid days off. She wants three more paid days off.

She can take the three days if she wants, and you're right - the school will gladly cover her classes. She just won't get paid for them.

My wife is a teacher - and I can tell you that 9 days off paid leave is extremely generous. My wife gets TWO. That's a damn good contract that the union negotiated.

So I guess the fauxrage is that the Union and the Board didn't make an exception, but that's the ol' slippery slope argument. Contracts are signed for a reason.

I'm sure this retarded article will get a few donations thrown this woman's way that will more than make up for the mild headache of taking a couple of unpaid leave days.

I have zero feelings for her. She likely is one of those employees that takes off every single vacation day and sick day they are allowed. I've worked with people in the past that wouldn't ever bank a single day of vacation, and would take their sick leave the day they qualified for it.

Then the assholes would come to work sick because they couldn't afford to miss a day, spreading their fucking germs to everyone else. I always keep vacation/sick leave banked. Final verdict....fuck her.

I have 4 months of vacation days and a month of sick days banked. I even do blood donations to get 3 hours comp time per pint. I'm a "leave hoarder".

Here's an idea, greedy cunt... you know your son is serving in Afghanistan, why don't you keep a few of your paid leave days in reserve "just in case" rather than burning through them like a selfish cunt because you wanted to go shopping or lay in bed all day rather than teach your class?

I love having that time banked. I took off last night so I could watch the BCS game. I'm taking tonight off because today is the anniversary of the day an unwed woman shat out a pudgy burden that would become the terror of the orphanage.
