SEATTLE -- Some May Day protestors ran rampant in Downtown Seattle Tuesday afternoon, smashing windows at businesses and cars as they marched through city streets and causing Seattle's City Hall to go into lockdown.

The chaos and property damage prompted Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn to grant emergency police powers to deal with any potential new riots that could crop up during the rest of the afternoon.

"Using the emergency powers of the mayor's office, I'm issuing an order for the limited purpose of giving police the authority to confiscate items that can be used as weapons," McGinn said.

McGinn said dozens of black-clad protesters were using items that looked like flagpoles as weapons. He said his order would enable police to take those items away from people before they are used to cause damage. McGinn said his action would help protect public safety as protests continued into Tuesday evening.

"My direction to the police is that I expect them to respond to lawbreaking swiftly and aggressively," McGinn said. "The First Amendment uses of 5-foot-long, 3-inch rod sticks is outweighed today by our desire to preserve public safety and confiscate weapons."

Property damage was extensive including a Wells Fargo bank, Niketown, Taphouse Grill, American Apparel and the old downtown federal courthouse. Seattle police tweeted that multiple vehicles were damaged along parts of Seneca Street and Sixth Avenue, and the HomeStreet Bank on 6th was also vandalized.

KOMO News reporter Joel Moreno says he and his photographer had been hit with a paint bomb while covering the march and ensuing riot.

He says about 50 people clad in all black outfits were throwing paint at buildings and cars, marking the anarchist symbols, "but there were certainly others not dressed in black participating in criminal behavior."

The march itself began just after 12:30 p.m. with about 200 people and then the group in black inserted itself into the middle of the parade body.

"They wasted no time," Moreno said. "They went about two blocks before they started damaging property."

Moreno said that's when he was hit with a paint bomb. But up ahead he started hearing glass shatter.

Warning: This video contains graphic language:

"We turned the corner and saw large storefronts at Wells Fargo smashed in," he said. "We saw a firebomb of some sort at the U.S. Court of Appeals where they went in and bashed the windows." Moreno said it looks like a firebomb was lobbed inside: "We saw smoke coming from inside the windows."

As protestors smashed windows at Niketown, store owners at nearby American Eagle store blocked their doors while customers were still inside in an effort to keep rioters out.

Police were using pepper spray, said a Seattlepi.com photographer who was caught in a melee.

There are no word on the number of any arrests. Police are asking any people or businesses who had their property vandalized should call the Seattle Police non-emergency line at (206) 625-5011.

'This is a real welcome to Seattle'

The riots had eased by just after 1 p.m. and calmer heads were prevailing, but parts of Downtown Seattle remained littered with broken glass, painted windows, smashed cars and slashed tires as emergency vehicles wound their way around the Downtown core. Nearly every car for an entire city block was damaged in some way.

One of those caught in the protests along Sixth Avenue was a tourist from Vancouver B.C. His car's windows were smashed in by protestors.

"My family came down for a holiday, welcome to the States!" he said. "They (protestors) were just going to town on (Niketown windows) and they (nearby cops) weren't doing anything."

"I don't know why people want pictures of my car. I don't know why they have to mouth off to me and tell me to go back to Canada," he said. "This is a real welcome to Seattle"

The rioters are separate from a peaceful protest and rally that has been under way at the Westlake Center.

At 5 p.m., a May Day march starts from a church in the Central District and will go to Wells Fargo's main downtown headquarters as it closes for the day, with frustrations about how the bank treats immigrants and immigration issues.

This is a breaking news situation. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.

Apparently the protest in Portland was pretty heavy as well.

Occupy Guitarmy Hoping to Make Music a Central Part of May Day Protest

You can't arrest a song!

That's part of the idea behind one faction of a large network of demonstrations and protests planned for May Day -- the day of action this Tuesday that some suspect will push Occupy Wall Street into the spotlight again in a major way.

Guitarmy... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech!

I've never wanted to kill a word, and every douche that utters said word, more in my life.

My anti-May Day tweets have gotten more RTs and responses than anything else I've done. I guess there are plenty of people out there who enjoy bashing these fucktards. Sorry, but when you are carrying on in a tradition that left tens of millions of working class people dead of starvation and persecution you don't deserve dialogue, serious debate, or any attention other than: "HA HA! Look at that asshole get tazed and maced at the same time! HA HA!!!!"

What the fuck is Mayday?
It's THE Marxist holiday.

Of course it's also "Opening Day" of #Occupy2012: The American Spring.

Add to that the Muslim world celebrating/honoring the anniversary of Bin Laden's death and the black, racist thug world celebrating the anniversary of the LA Riots and today has the potential to be quite interesting.

I think we can safely say that today's protests have been an absolute failure. People worked, kids went to school, banking continued, chores were done, and goods and services were exchanged for money. Happy Workers' Day.

But they are COMMUNIST AGITATORS!!! Ignore their impotence and probable lack of knowledge of any actual Marxist principles and cower in fear!

Have you ever seen an Occupy protester speak during an interview? They are criminally retarded. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them cooked and buttered their own hand while making toast.

Of course I have. That's why I find it ridiculous that anyone can consider them a threat to anything. They make black women who just lost their chill'in seem positively eloquent.

I can sort of understand the window smashing of the bank and even them tossing a firebomb into the court of appeals, but I will never understand the mindset of destroying somebody's car. Look there's a 10 year old Toyota Camry, lets smash it cuz 1%. So now some working class guy can't get to his 99% job.

They're hilarious and completely enraging at the same time. Fuck off and die, hippies. Or learn economics. Whichever comes first (after a shower, of course).

You're in the midst of riot/mob mentality. Do you really think there's a logic behind it? It's just fun to smash stuff.

They're annoying because you cannot talk with them or discuss anything with them because they're just so myopic (same with political correctness, sexism, racism, Kirkism). But I really just see it as young people being young and stupid. Some people might smash a car or a window, but for the most part these people are weak, passive losers who just want to be around people. They'll grow out of it. I mean for the love of God they came up with the term guitarmy.

I can't get myself to get legitimately angry (though I get far more annoyed with the political correctness arguments).

That kind of idiocy doesn't just come with youth. Those people are dumb for life.

I guess having never participated in a riot I have no understanding of the group mentality of "smashing things is fun". Though at the gun club on fully automatic day is was fun to turn an old pickup into swiss cheese.

You should understand that just by virtue of being an American male.

Sure it's fun to break shit, but not if it belongs to other people. Vandalism was never one of my favorite things. Shooting an old TV set, or smashing a microwave we found in a pile of illegal dumped trash is fun. But I wasn't a shit head about it.

Pretty certain I said POTENTIAL. Too bad they suck.

These anarchists should just find a nice tea party to attend...:icon_cool
I know right! Everyone knows the two groups are pretty much interchangeable. Really what's the difference between a few old people dressing up like Paul Revere or Betsy Ross and waving an American flag and 'legions' of young people smashing things while wearing all black and a V for Vendetta mask? Oh that's right, one has the backing of the Media and the ruling Party and the other gets put on 'domestic watch lists'. :icon_cool

A lot of places shut down. Our building (work, not home) had all sorts of extra security measures in place.
