Microsoft says Steve Ballmer will retire as the company's CEO within 12 months, as the tech giant continues to navigating a rapidly-changing computer market.

In a statement released Friday, Microsoft says Ballmer will stay on to help search for his successor.

"There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time," Ballmer said in a statement.

Shares of Microsoft surged 9% in early trading off the announcement.

Microsoft will appoint a special committee -- which will include board chairman and founder Bill Gates -- to search for Ballmer's replacement. "I'll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO," said Gates.

Ballmer joined the Redmond, Wash., company in 1980 as its first business manager before becoming CEO in 2000. During that time, he oversaw several key initiatives including the launch of the Xbox video game console and several iterations of its Windows operating system.

Figured someones head would roll for the XB1/E3 clusterfuck. They didn't just shit the bed, they dumped one of those 'Nicollini dietpill/pizza shits' and rolled around in it after the fact.

As someone one who just bought a new desktop with Windows 8 on it, I have to say I really don't see why so many people had a problem with it.

Completely serious. Nothing beats a massive pool of players with exactly the same specs. You don't have to worry about tools with suped up cheat machines or poor fucks running Halo on a Commodore 64.

If you're into those type of games where specs rule the day, I 100% see your point. I'm not into those type of multiplayer games though, so a PC > Console. Civ 5, certain MMO's, the plethora of single player that plays way better on PC than console, etc. Depends on the game you're referring to.

I went from 32 bit xp to 64 bit windows 8 on by xp HP Workstation, and the transition was flawless. Not everyone will have that same experience. Windows 8 works great on my machine and it is faster and looks better.

Paul Allen, one of Microsoft's founders, said Ballmer and Gates tried to steal his stake in MS when he got cancer. Not sorry to see this guy go away.
