Mahamud Said Omar is accused of assisting al-Shabab, a U.S.-designated terror group at the center of much of the violence in Somalia.

MINNEAPOLIS — A jury of 10 women and six men has been chosen to hear the case of a Minnesota man accused of helping to send U.S. men to fight for a terror group in Somalia.

Mahamud (mah-hah-MOOD') Said (sy-EED') Omar faces five terror-related counts at his federal trial in Minneapolis. Prosecutors say he encouraged young men to fight for al-Shabab which has been linked to al-Qaida. They also say he helped some men get airline tickets and helped pay for weapons.

Omar has said he's innocent. His attorney says he's never lifted a hand against the U.S.
Minneapolis has the United States' largest population of Somali immigrants.
Opening statements are planned for Tuesday.

Lewiston mayor asked to resign after comments

Mayor Robert MacDonald gives his inaugural address at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston, Me. MacDonald is drawing criticism for remarks he made in a radio interview about Somali refugees in his city. LEWISTON — Two groups are asking Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald to resign following comments he made about the city's Somali population.

The Lewiston office of the Maine People's Alliance is gathering signatures for a petition asking Macdonald to step down.

The Sun Journal reports that the African Diaspora Institute in Portland also called for Macdonald's resignation during a Monday news conference outside City Hall.

MacDonald, a former U.S. Marine and city police officer, told the British Broadcasting Corp. that immigrants are costing the city a lot of money and they should "accept our culture and leave your culture at the door."

The BBC's segment focused on the resettlement of nearly 6,000 Somalis to Lewiston over the past decade.

Messages left for Macdonald at his office and home were not returned Monday.

Any doubt when you saw the headline "Minnesota Man" that they meant "Muslim foreigner who immigrated to Minnesota"?
The press loves to say "British man" or "American national" as if Ian Farnsworth or Billy Anderson was colluding with lunatic muslim terrorists.

That's one problem I have with a lot of libertarian commentators. They're really big on describing the drones strikes on American-born terrorists in the Middle East as, "assassination of American citizens abroad". It's technically correct, but it's extremely misleading. I don't necessarily disagree with the point, but I completely disagree with the presentation of the point.

Lots of somalians here, lots in Minnesota, they work in the packing plants. There's even Somalia gangs that do all the usual, plus human trafficking, white slavery stuff.
