VLC is an open source player. I think for legal and licensing reasons, the codec can't include formats considered proprietary, like: wmv or rm.

Otherwise it does just about everything.

I got VLC for one reason, I could watch Der Untergang and it let me view the subs, yet I had to manually drag and drop the file into the player. An issue I had with volume not being loud enough seems to be fixed with VLC also. The only thing I noticed one night when I was watching ST: The Voyage Home, the quality of the video wasn't so good when compared to Media Player Classic which I use for everything else.

Nice list.

MsConfig Cleanup.....control start up programs
I prefer Autoruns, as it will allow you to fully control not only startup items but also DLLs when other programs start such as IE loading certain plugins you may or may not have allowed to install.

I like AVG, but prefer Eeye's Blink program, since it sits under the application layer and scans from there. They caught and fixed the Animated cursor worm 3 months before Microsoft decided to.

Didn't you have a list like this or something similar a while back, SOS?
There's goodies on this list though, some stuff I use myself.

Adding a few for what it's worth:

Rivatuner - Tunes your video card. Not for novice users though.
CDisplay - read comic books with this.
ImgBurn - free cd/dvd image writer/disc burning util
Anapod Explorer - Itunes alternative, best thing ever for ipods.
Sniper already mentioned Autoruns, it's top notch.
I know I'm forgetting a ton, too. I'll chime back in.

I need a good filejoiner for mostly MPEG and WMV files, any recommendations for that? I have a really really super shitty one that takes as long as the videos are, but I remember a really good trial version I had that was really quick and worked well, but can't remember what it was called.

Awesome lists by the way, I'll have to check out the ones I don't have.

Rapidshare is the best bargain to be found anywhere in the known universe. The terabytes of movies, music and software you can download with a one year membership makes Rapidshare the greatest deal since the Louisiana Purchase.

...but I ain't one to gossip; so you didn't hear it from me.

Open Office -- Does everything Microsoft Office can do, but better.

Pidgin -- Instant Messenger to replace AOL's ad-intrusive and annoying AIM.

Audacity -- Free audio recorder/editor.

I wouldn't say openoffice is better, but it does a lot for free. I do miss MS office at times. But for the price it's not worth it.
