'My size is none of your business': The woman who sparked a debate on beauty after Facebook picture in her underwear

By Daily Mail Reporter
PUBLISHED: 08:04 EST, 21 October 2012 | UPDATED: 02:09 EST, 22 October 2012

This is the photograph which sparked a debate among thousands of people and challenged opinions on beauty and size.

Stella Boonshoft originally posted the picture on her Tumblr account, The Body Love Blog, before it was picked up by photographer Brandon Stanton and published on his photography site Humans of New York.

Since it was posted on Thursday, 455,000 people have liked the picture and it has been shared 20,000 times.

Acceptance: The photograph originally appeared on Stella Boonshoft's Tumblr, The Body Love Blog, and was later posted on Facebook by photographer Brandon Stanton

The image came to be posted after Stella, a NYU student, spotted Brandon on the street in Manhattan and asked if she could take a picture of him.

In return, he asked to take a picture of her - and later posted the picture of her in a bikini which appears on her blog.

Stella admitted that her first reaction was to 'burst into tears' when thousands of people started looking at her picture and she contemplated taking it down.

She decided to leave the picture online, where the overwhelming majority of comments have been supportive.

Stella said:'I know what I am trying to do, which is help young women struggling with their body image and expose the hypocrisy and cruelty that is sizeism, is SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT whatever feelings I may have about myself.'

Proud: Stella Boonshoft posted the picture in response to everyone who has ever bulled her because of her size
Nice stretch marks.

Here is her AW post:

'THIS IS MY BODY, DEAL WITH IT': STELLA BOONSHOFT IN HER OWN WORDS

WARNING: Picture might be considered obscene because subject is not thin. And we all know that only skinny people can show their stomachs and celebrate themselves. Well I’m not going to stand for that. This is my body. Not yours. MINE. Meaning the choices I make about it, are none of your f****** business. Meaning my size, IS NONE OF YOUR F****** BUSINESS.
If my big belly and fat arms and stretch marks and thick thighs offend you, then that’s okay. I’m not going to hide my body and my being to benefit your delicate sensitivities.
This picture is for the strange man at my nanny’s church who told me my belly was too big when I was five.
This picture is for my horseback riding trainer telling me I was too fat when I was nine.
This picture is for the girl from summer camp who told me I’d be really pretty if I just lost a few pounds
This picture is for all the f****** stupid advertising agents who are selling us cream to get rid of our stretch marks, a perfectly normal thing most people have (I got mine during puberty)
This picture is for the boy at the party who told me I looked like a beached whale.
This picture is for Emily from middle school, who bullied me incessantly, made mocking videos about me, sent me nasty emails, and called me “lard”. She made me feel like I didn’t deserve to exist. Just because I happened to be bigger than her. I was 12. And she continued to bully me via social media into high school.
MOST OF ALL, this picture is for me. For the girl who hated her body so much she took extreme measures to try to change it. Who cried for hours over the fact she would never be thin. Who was teased and tormented and hurt just for being who she was.
I’m so over that.
THIS IS MY BODY, DEAL WITH IT
And the fatty apologists on fark are amusing:

Welcome to Big Fat Blog!

Big Fat Blog - BFB for short - was founded in August, 2000 by Paul McAleer and has its roots in size discrimination research he did in college. After giving a lecture on sizism he put his materials on the web... but they soon grew stale. Thankfully there was this new site called Blogger which would allow him to keep the site updated easily, and the rest is history.
Since its inception, BFB has had guest bloggers, co-authors, and contributors, but the majority of the content was written by Paul. In April 2009,

Carrie Padian of The Fat Rights Coalition took over content creation and daily management of the site. BFB still focuses on the media as it did in 2000 but has expanded to support the fatosphere with an events calendar, forums, activism, and lots more.
BFB has been recognized as one of the grandparents of the fatosphere, helping in a small way to encourage others to blog about fat acceptance and fat rights. As of August 2008, the site has 2,700 registered members (though many are lurkers or inactive), and averages 65,000 unique visitors each month.

BFB has been featured in many publications and corners of the media including, but not limited to, the San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Orlando Weekly, Australia's The Age, the BBC, MSNBC, CNN, Time, Marie Claire, Figure, and Elastic Waist's The Daily Special.

As of the end of 2011, the Big Fat Blog's front page is being added to by long time members, in rotation. DeeLeigh, one of those contributers, rewrote the user registration guidelines in 2010 to clarify BFB's mission and remove a few remarks that have led to misunderstandings over the years. The current version begins as follows:

What BFB is

Big Fat Blog (BFB) is a site devoted to fat acceptance. We publicize and comment on issues that affect social justice for fat people:
  • Media trends and reporting;
  • Medical research;
  • Societal issues;
  • Stereotypes;
  • Body size in history and anthropology;
  • Fat people's experiences in the world, both positive and negative;
  • Social justice and fat activism.
BFB also has forums that are only accessible to members.

Whether you're just getting into fat acceptance or are a seasoned activist, a HAES-friendly professional, or an ally, we welcome your participation. We welcome people of all backgrounds, orientations, abilities, political persuasions, etc.

So instead of the picture humiliating her and possibly motivating her to change her lifestyle and get in shape she says "Fuck you, I look good". Motherfucking doomed.

And, according to fark, WE are the ones who are wrong for thinking that.

If she is happy being a big fatso, let her be one.
But she's not happy... none of these hypocrite fatsos are happy being fat. If they could push a button and be skinny... if they didn't have to work and sacrifice... every one of them would mash their pudgy fingers down on the button in two seconds. They don't prefer to be fat... they just lack the discipline and self control to be otherwise.

When the broads say they're fat and happy, they're lying...

Exception... sheboons... the sheboons just plain don't care that they're fat disasters because they're shameless, and they are in good company with all of the other fat sheboons, and the black men have no shame either(or gag reflex)and they'll still bang the fatties... so the sheboons are fat and happy.

Here's a perfect example of a hypocritical "BBW" fatty...

Remember this cow? The pig who slammed O&A for the "Fatty Pig Fatty" contest? Here she is slamming somebody else who dared to speak the simple truth that fatsos are repulsive...

To Maura Kelly and Marie Claire: I'm Fat. Deal With It!

Just today I learned about Maura Kelly’s inflammatory blog at Marie Claire about fat people. Seems she was asked by her editor to comment about whether or not seeing fat people make-out on TV made people in general feel uncomfortable, and was given the new TV show Mike and Molly as her example. What followed was a hateful, shockingly ignorant and poorly written diatribe against fat people, even though Ms. Kelly had never seen the show in question.

I’ve been bullied most of my life about my weight, which started climbing when I was around 8 years old. Blah... blah... blah...
But this hypocrite has repeatedly struggled to lose weight... and failed every time...

As many of you know who read this blog, I’ve been on a mission to lose 100 lbs in 2008. Well, several months ago I stalled at 22 lbs, wobbled, and then staggered backward when my life hit yet another pot hole of work crap, deadlines and, oh yeah, a car fire. In my regression, I gained 9 lbs of it back in a frenzy of comfort eating. Now I’m back on track and have re-lost the errant 9 lbs.
She set a goal in 2008 years ago to lose 100 lbs... and now it's 2012 and she's fatter than she was in 2008.

In the course of one of her yo-yo diets she managed to lose 30 lbs... and she bragged about how healthy and energetic she felt, and she drank in all the compliments her other fat yenta friends gave her about how good she looked like chocolate milk, "They all tell me how hot and skinny I am! I'm sexy, grrrr!" But... then she put all of the weight back on(and then some) and she went right back to her "Fat is beautiful! Deal with it!" bullshit. Just another fat, disgusting "BBW" hypocrite.

No woman with an ounce of dignity and self-respect LIKES being fat... none of them are happy being fat... they may accept that they're fat... they may be resigned to their fat fate... but, trust me... none of them LIKE it.

I have nothing against people who are happy being fat (as long as they can still be productive members of society)... I'm much more annoyed at her being an attention whore. Being overweight is not an accomplishment, therefore it's nothing to be celebrated. It's like giving a trophy to both the winning and losing teams... now fat people are essentially demanding to be considered as beautiful as people who are in shape. Either get in shape and be proud of your hard work, or focus on another quality to brag about. Otherwise simply be content in who you are, quietly.

Totally agree.

But we all know attention whores love any and all attention. I'm sure she is gloating all the way to the fridge.

My understanding of why black men fuck fatso's is because its the only thing they can go balls deep into besides farm animals.

Really wish people would just stop the whole 'accept me for who I am even if I'm an unhealthy, tubby piece of human flotsam'. Unhealthy is not attractive. Stretch marks are easy to remedy also. As said before, doomed.

Yep, I see her point. I'm proud about skipping gym last week too. Going out drinking every night instead was a great achievement, and I plan on sticking to this new lifestyle. It feels like it's more "me".

Who cares what we know about how a rational person should live their life. What matters is what feels good at the moment. Eating cake feels good? Just eat cake all the time.

Hell I'm definitely not in the greatest shape, but I'm also not running around saying how good looking I am (unless I'm drinking). If looking good is important to this girl, then she should feel bad about being overweight and at least make some attempt at remedying the situation... you can't just change the rules because it's easier. If you're fine being overweight then more power to you, but you have to concede that you're going to be less appealing than someone who is in great shape. That's a huge difference between women and men... at least we can be honest about this shit.

This is what we get for allowing women to be empowered...

99% of the bloated bitches who are yelling about how big is beautiful are just trying to convince themselves of that fact. Those are the ones that I have a problem with.
