NEW YORK (AP) -- An employee of the National Children's Museum in Washington was arrested Tuesday on child pornography charges, accused of sending about 80 explicit images this summer to people including a New York City detective.

Robert A. Singer, 49, of Falls Church, Va., was arrested at his home on charges that he sent pornographic images to someone he thought was a 33-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter, U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said in New York. In a statement, the museum said it was "horrified'' by the events.

Actually, the e-mail recipient during the exchanges in August and September was a New York detective who posed as the mother and daughter after Singer initiated contact in an AOL chat room called Cuties, according to a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. Singer also exchanged images with other people around the same time, the complaint said.

The images sent to the detective by Singer from his AOL account on a computer at the museum depicted sexual acts between minors and adults, the complaint said.

Singer, communicating as Badboy2at, instructed the daughter to "just delete it when you are done'' after sending two images depicting child pornography, the complaint said.

Singer was charged with five counts of distributing child pornography in interstate commerce. He was detained Tuesday pending a bail hearing later in the week. If convicted, he could face a prison term of up to 40 years on the most serious charges.

A man who answered the phone at Singer's residence Tuesday said that there was no one to immediately comment on the arrest and that it was not clear who his lawyer might be. Later in the day, a message left at the number for comment was not immediately returned.

In the complaint, Singer was identified as a spokesman for the Capital Children's Museum, which closed in September 2004 to prepare for renovations and a 2012 reopening as the National Children's Museum.

He was accused in the complaint of boasting in his e-mail communications that he worked near "all your favorite'' monuments.

The museum's offices are located a mile from the Washington monument, a mile and a half from the White House and a little over a mile from the Capitol, the complaint said.

In a statement posted on its Web site, the National Children's Museum said it was notified Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement division that one of its employees had been arrested.

"We are horrified by the charges. This news is deeply upsetting to the National Children's Museum family,'' it said. "We have pledged our complete cooperation to law enforcement officials and will support their ongoing investigation in any way possible.''

It said it immediately suspended Singer and barred him from the property.

"Anyone who does anything that might endanger the welfare of a child has no place here,'' it said. "Harming children is against everything we stand for as an organization and as individuals.''
