I have a dell inspiron 6000 notebook, it was working great lately and all of a sudden i went to turn it on and i get the screen that tells me windows didn't start succesfully. all the option bring me to the blue screen of death so i can't load windows at all. I'm planning on buying a new one but does anyone know if i can somehow get this thing running so i can at least get like my pictures or something.

before windows loads up can you get into the setup to load windows in safe mode? its like f6 or something, it says it as you power up. also, whats does dell support have to say?

something similar happened to me a few years back on my toshiba laptop. i couldnt boot up at all. i had to go to a data recovery place for work stuff, but they transfered all my media and pics off as well. fucking 500$ to get my data but got it back in about a day. sucked ass, but my hard drive was totally shot for whatever reason so i had no choice.

You may have to re-install XP. Recovery CDs? XP CD?

You may have to load a bootable operating system such as ebcd or knoppix and transfer your files to an external USB thumbdrive/harddrive.

Make a boot disk (any Linux Live Cds that let you read NTFS...or Windows boot disk [but you'll need to load the drivers that will let you access USB or CD-Burner]) and copy your files.

Use the XP CD that came with it and access the recovery console. Google is your friend and can give you the specifics.

You can restore your boot sector, MBR, all kind of cool stuff via the recovery console. I routinely fix "BSOD's" using a Dell OEM XP cd and a bit of knowhow.

That's the biggest fucking scam going. If they had to do anything "forensic", like physically taking apart the drive and moving the platters to a different casing, then $500 would be impossibly cheap and I apologize-eh.

But likely all the con artist cunts did was pop an adapter on the drive and hook it to another PC and pull the shit off it in the background while they looked at dog porn and thought of ways to spend your money.

Check for a program like GetDataBackNTFS that can recover shit even if the file allocation table is corrupt.

get your windows xp cd or your dell OS disk. Its either blue or dark brown.

Insert the disk and hit f12 to choose the boot order, choose cd rom also may be listed as ATAPI IDE DEVICE CDROM.

Once the windows setup loads, Hit R for recovery console.

You will see a black screen with some keyboard bs, just wait. It will ask you to choose a windows install. YOu many see something like this

1:> C:\WIndows
2:> D:\I386

choose 1 for windows or the appropriate number.

if it ask you for the admin pass. Put it in. If you dont have one for admin hit enter

you will a prompt. at the prompt type.

fixboot hit enter
then chkdsk /r and enter

then go make a sandwich and masturbate or what ever it is you do.

Let it finish.

Reboot.

However, if you do not see a windows install at the prompt. then your file system is shot. You can rebuild it however, the time and effort is generally in vain.

Good luck.

you can also try BART PE. It will allow you to get your data.

you can also disable all the startup items and non ms services with it.

that may allow you to boot.

Agreed - Bart PE rocks. If your filesystem is OK, BartPE is probably the easiest way to go to save your porn, assuming you have another PC to create the boot disc on.

ive always equated it to the scene in vacation when they get stranded in the arizona desert and when chevy asks how much for the service tab, the mechanic says "how much you got?" then chevy says, no no im asking what the total is. and the mechanic says "and im asking how much you got?!"

thats essentially how i felt, but my need for the data was so great that i didnt really have a choice at the time.

Agreed, but use the Ultimate Boot Disk, its BartPE on steroids. As long as the disk isnt mechanically bad, and just a Windows software related problem, it WILL get your data back. I use it all the time on my customer's computers.
