Bellingham clerk with mop fights off armed robber

BELLINGHAM - A robbery attempt ended with a surprise when a minimart clerk used a mop to fight off a knife-wielding suspect Monday night, March 19, according to the Bellingham Police Department.
Police responded to a report of an attempted robbery at about 9:45 p.m. at the Starvin' Sam's on 12th Street and Donovan Avenue.
An employee told police that a man entered the minimart while the clerk was mopping in the cashier area, Sgt. Jason Monson said. The man took out a knife and then jumped over the counter into the area where the man was mopping. The clerk used the mop to fight the man, knocking him to the floor.

"He mopped him up," Monson said.
The struggle continued outside of the store until the failed robber fled. A police dog couldn't locate the man, but the clerk described him as 30 to 40 years old with dark, shaggy hair and a mustache. He was about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds, and was last seen wearing blue sweatpants and a light shirt.
The clerk received minor scrapes and bruises in the fight. Nothing was taken, though some merchandise was knocked off shelves during the struggle.
Police will be checking surveillance video in the area and are continuing to investigate the incident.
