From the Journal of Medical Ethics. Yes, it's real. Many libertarians and liberals argue that a fetus is not a person and therefore an abortion is not immoral and should be left up to the mother. I personally disagree because the fetus has the potential to become a person and it is unfair to terminate the life before its opportunity to achieve personhood. I feel that since no one can pinpoint when exactly it becomes a "life" it is best not to kill it. Traditionally, the arbitrary point of personhood has been when it leaves the woman's body and magically morphs from a fetus to a baby. Well forget all that. These two ethicists are attempting to define personhood as not happening until the individual becomes self aware. Who the fuck knows when THAT arbitrary boundary is crossed, but the ethicists list a few days to a few WEEKS as wholly permissible. I have seen evidence that children do not recognize themselves in a mirror until about 1 to 2 years, and thus do not understand that they are an individual person. This is fucking ridiculous. http://jme.bmj.com/content/early/2012/03/01/medethics-2011-100411.full Wow, so we do have a moral duty to those future people that might some day exist theoretically, but once individual people are born, we have no duty to protect their future? What a load of bullshit.
